Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Long long ago in a village, there were a widow and her daughter who were very poor. They even very difficult for daily food and they just used to do hireling for others as their livelihood. One day, they left the rice that they got from yesterday's hireling in the sun and the mother went to a farm. The mother said to her daughter that "You watch the rice. Don't let the chicken and pig eat the rice. This rice is the essential food for us to survive. We have to eat this rice in the evening and the next morning as well. When the rice is ready, grind the rice and cook it." The daughter was watching the rice the whole day by sitting under the sun. Because she got tired and also bored, she moved under the shadow and lay down for just a moment but she fell to sleep. She fell to sleep and when she woke up, she saw that a crow ate all the rice that she was watching. The crow ate all the rice and was sitting there. "The crow, you ate all the rice of us. My mom said that this rice is the essential food for us to be able to survive. We don't have any rice to eat now. You just should have eaten some rice and should leave some for us. You ate all. How to do it now? My mom will get angry with me," said the girl. Then, the crow said that "As I ate the rice, I will repay you. No problem. Come at the Lagat tree, which is located in Numshang plateau in this evening." The girl had no rice anymore and she was also afraid of her mom so as the crow said, she went to the Numshang plateau and when she got to the Lagat tree, the crow said from above that "Climb to me where I am." "No, I can't climb. I am also afraid of falls. I can't climb," said the girl. Then, the crow said that "If you can't climb, I will arrange two ladders for you. One is a gold ladder and one is made of bamboo. You can climb to me with either ladder," and the crow provided two ladders. Then, the girl said that "Since I and my mom are very poor, I don't dare to climb with the gold ladder. I don't dare to step on it. Let me just climb with the bamboo ladder," and the girl climbed with the bamboo ladder. When she got to the crow, the crow had already cooked food. There were also two plates. One was a gold plate and another one was a normal plate. And, the crow also prepared two-three curries. The crow said that "Eat it. Do you want to eat on the gold plate or the normal plate? Also, do you want to eat with better curries, meat and fish curries or with the vegetable? Eat what you like?" At that time, the girl said that "Because we are poor, I don't dare to eat with gold plate. I will just eat with this normal plate that we usually eat." "Eat the curries whatever you like," said the crow. The girl said that "I haven't eaten good curries such as meat and fish curries at home as well. We just eat the vegetable." So, she just ate the vegetable curries. When it was getting dark, the crow gave a gold cup to the girl. The crow gave the gold cup and said that "You and your mom can do with this gold cup whatever you want to do. If you want to ask something, ask the cup. It will do for you." Since it was getting dark and her mother was also almost back home, she returned home and tested with the cup herself. "Hey, my mother will return with very hungry. I want food," the girl said to the cup. As soon as they said to the cup, the rice pot was filled with rice and also with good curries. When her mother got home, she told everything about the day. "Mother, it is a gold cup that was given by the crow. The crow said that we can ask it whatever we want," said the daughter. Her mother was also very happy. Since then, they didn't need to work a lot anymore. They ate well with good food. They wore good clothes. They also lived in a good house. They were very happy. People from the village came and asked them about how they got rich and why they got rich. One day, there was a girl who was also poor like them but she was arrogant. The girl was told by the woman and the daughter how they got rich. So, she also did. She left the rice in the run and watched the whole day. Then, she fell to sleep and the crow ate all the rice again. Then, the girl said that "This rice is the essential food for the whole family to survive. How the family will survive now because you ate all? You should have eaten half and should leave half. You ate it all." Then, the crow said that "As I ate all rice, I will repay you. Come at the Lagat tree, which is located in Numshang plateau in this evening." The girl also went to the Lagat tree on the Numshang plateau. When she got there, the crow said that "Climb to me where I am." Then, the girl said that "I can't climb there. I am a girl. I am afraid of fall. I can't climb." "If you can't climb, no problem. I will provide two ladders. One is a gold ladder and another one is made of bamboo. You can climb with either ladder that you want," said the crow. Then, as the girl was arrogant, she said that "Even though I am poor, to be able to tell others that I have been stepped on the gold ladder, I will climb with the gold ladder," and she climbed with the gold ladder. When she got to the crow, she was also served with a gold plate as well as with a normal plate. The crow prepared good curries and also vegetable curries. The crow said that "You can eat what you want." At that time, the girl said that "Because I am poor at home, I haven't eaten with gold plate. So, I will eat with the gold plate. I also can't eat good food and curries at home. I will eat here with good food and curries." And, she ate with the gold plate. She also just ate good curries and did not eat the vegetable curries. As before, the crow gave a cup to the girl. But, it was a bronze cup, not a gold cup. "Now, if you want anything, ask to this cup. You will get what you want," said the crow and gave the bronze cup. When she got home, even though she asked for food, clothes, money, the bronze did not provide anything like the gold cup. The bronze cup gave nothing. Therefore, it means that people should not have arrogant and inhuman minds. It is the end.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
