Long long ago, there was a very beautiful girl in a village. Her appearance was very smooth and she was the most beautiful girl. Because her skin was white and smooth since she was young, her family also took care of and valued her like the jade on the finger. Since she was a single daughter, no one taught well her. She also did not know how to weave because no one also taught her weaving even though she was very beautiful. Because she was very beautiful and became an adult, every adult man who saw her also wanted to love her. All men loved her. One day, seven men from different villages discussed to do trading. Then, they went to do trading. When they were going, as it was time for lunch in the middle of the day, they said to take a rest at a public rest house because they felt hungry and to continue their journey. So, each person opened the respective lunch box that they brought themselves. At that time, the curries of all seven persons were the same. Thus, they opened the lunch box and got amazed so they looking at each other. Then, they asked each other. "All of the curries that we brought are the same. Who did send for your lunch?" asked each other. "Mine was sent by Chyanun Num Majan," said a person. All seven persons also said that their lunches were sent by the girl (Chyanun Num Majan). So, they were amazed again. Some wanted to get angry. Some were getting angry. "Ahh...I thought she only loves me but now to all seven persons. I should be the only one who can marry her," some secretly thought themselves so. But, how most of them thought were that they got angry. They said that "The girl who dares to love we all seven men at the same time is a girl who does not keep promise, undignified and greedy girl. She made all seven of us shame like this. So, we also should revenge her. We should do something to her." What they discussed was that "Such a greedy girl! Let's go to bring and sell her to a workplace of rich men. Let's sell her to the rich men." They discussed and all seven men agreed and persuaded the girl to go to a market and sold her to a rich man. "Rich man, this girl is very active. It seems she also looks like you. She is also very beautiful. Please take her. We came to sell you," said the men. The rich man asked, "How much?" They have already discussed the price and asked for a high price. The rich man said he would pay the price whatever they asked. When they were negotiating the price, the girl approached the rich man and said silently that "Let's go inside the house for just a moment." So, the rich man and the girl entered the house. After they entered the house, what the girl said to the rich man was that "They are not to sell me. I am coming to sell the seven men to you. They are the servants who are working at my home. Because there were many servants, I decided to sell all seven men. Please buy them. They are very fast at work. They are also very good and honest. After you buy these seven men, you won't need to buy servant anymore." The girl flattered the rich man so. But, the rich man was not interested much to buy the seven men. He was interested more to buy the girl, Chyabu Num Majan. So, "Hi girl, I really love you. Would it be possible to live with me? Don't you love me?" the rich man said. The girl said that "If you love me, I also love you. So, let's live together. Please also buy these seven men as the servants." So, the rich man asked the price for the seven men and the girl asked the price as much as she wanted. Moreover, she also asked for money for herself. "Rich man, if you love me, you have to pay some amount first for a bride. I need to give some money to my parents," said the girl. She asked for the highest price for herself as well. On that day, the girl got quite a lot of money. Then, the girl said to the rich man that "Rich man, my family will worry me if I stay here for the whole day. This time, let me return home and give the money that you paid me for the servants and the bride. Next week you come to me with these seven servants to bring me. I will follow you then." The rich man also agreed and already paid all the money. The girl left from the back door although she came in from the front door because she wanted to avoid the seven men. As soon as she left the rich man, she immediately ran. After she ran away, the seven men who were waiting outside said that "It has been quite a while that the girl and the rich man went in the house." At that time, the rich man came out. He came out and said that "I have bought you all seven so let's go to the servant camp over there." Then, the seven men got angry. They said that "We are coming here to sell you the girl. Pay us money." The rich man said that "Yes, I already paid her the money for the bride as well as for you all seven men because she said that she came here to sell you all. From today, you all are servants for me and the girl. So, let's go to the servant camp." All the men got angry and ran away. The girl also ran alone and she got tired. When she got to a public rest house, she climbed on the tree and sat there because she was afraid to be followed her. The seven men who ran away from the market also slept at the same public rest house. When it got dark, the men said that "Since we did not bring any blanket and cloth and it will be cold tonight, we six men will go to take woods and you one man make fire and wait here." When the only one man was sitting on fire, the girl called the man with a hand gesture from the tree and the man climbed to her. In the past era, all single girls and men used to chew tobacco leaves. They ate variety. The girl said to the man that "I love you very much. Let's chew these tobacco leaves together." The tobacco leaf could be drunk if jahkwi (an ingredient) was added. Jahkwi was very strong. People who were not used to chew tobacco could be drunk easily. The man also just chewed the tobacco leaves because he loved the girl. The man chewed the tobacco leaves until his lips got red. Then, they hugged and kissed each other. When the man put her tongue into the girl's mouth, the girl bit to cut half of the man's tongue. Thus, the man lost his tongue and got hurt so he moved and fell from the tree. Under the tree, the other men were looking for their friend, "where did this man go? We left him alone and we lost him. We lost him." At that time, the man fell from the free so the other men got scared and ran away. When they looked from quite far, they saw that the man was their friend. They said that "Oh... he is our friend. We don't have to be afraid." When they went back to the man and asked, the man told them but no one understood what he was telling because he lost his tongue. The more the man talked, the more bleeding from his mouth, and no one understood what he talked. So, all men left the man and ran away. Then, the girl who was on the top of the tree came down from the tree. And, the girl and the man thought that if they returned home, the people would punish them so they went to a cave beside a river and lived there. They also had children but they run out of the money that they got from the rich man for selling the seven servants and for the bride after they spent several years. They even didn't have clothes anymore to wear so they just covered their bodies with banana leaves and lived poorly. Because the father could not speak well, the children also could not speak well like other children. A greedy person will eventually fail.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
