Title Grai rai dum ai shu hkan nu a lam (The haughty frog mother) with English translation
Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a small lake. In the lake, there were a total of seven frogs mother and her children. Frog children were six and including the mother were seven. They had been living happily for many years there. When they were living so, one day, the frog mother went to a place that was far to find food. After the frog mother went to find food, a big male buffalo came to the lake to eat the food because the pasture was very good there. When the buffalo came, the frog siblings went and hid in the place where there were thick grasses. When the six frog siblings were hiding, the buffalo also gradually ate and moved to the good grass. The buffalo moved and he accidentally stepped on the grass that the frog siblings were hiding. When the buffalo stepped on, he trampled one of the frog children. The rest of the frog siblings collected the dead body of their brother and when they were hiding with fear, their mother returned. When the mother got home, she called that "My children, come to me. Why are you running?" Then, "Mother, today, a big animal who had four legs and also had the flat fleet came into the place where we were living and trampled our little brother even until intestine came out. Thus, we were sorrowfully waiting for you here," said the frog children. So, the frog mother got angry a lot and asked that "How big is the animal that stepped on you?" Then, the frog mother jumped onto a stump that was in a little bit higher place and swelled her belly. "Is that big such this," asked the frog mother. "Mother, not that small," said the children. The frog mother swelled her belly again and asked that "Is that big such this?" "Not that small. It was bigger than that," said the frog children. Finally, the third time, the frog mother said, "such this?" and swelled her belly but she swelled overly so her belly was ruptured. Because the frog mother's belly was ruptured, the frog children were amazed. They were also amazed because their youngest brother was trampled. Thus, only five siblings were sitting there. When they were sitting, another frog came to them. "What you siblings are doing? Why are you gathering?," asked the frog. "Today, an animal came to our place and trampled our brother. Our mother also asked how big the animal was and swelled her belly. As she could not swell as the animal, her belly was ruptured. It was ruptured," said the frog children. The frog said that "You mother! Such a little body compared with the animal. Your mother was also very arrogant since long time ago. Such happened today because she was very arrogant. You siblings, if such a thing happens in the future, do not be selfish and arrogant. If it happens like this, you have to accept what happened. You have to forgive each other." The frog children also said that "Yes, we won't arrogant as our mother in the future. We won't also be selfish as our mother." The frog children admitted and accepted so. This story is similar to the attitude that happens in today's humans; if you kick me one time, I will kick you two times. Therefore, if there is anything happens like this, we should evaluate what we do without rival each other. We should not be like the frog mother who was ruptured to death as she was arrogant. Today, based on this story of frog mother, if we humble, we will reach to a good way. I am telling this story as much as I remembered and noted.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
