Title Madu wa hpe jahkri hkri kau (The Tragedy of Danai) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a family with two sons in a place called Danai Ginsa Lawk. They did farming at a farm near their village. The father was a drug addict. He often tortured his wife. The wife endured his torture as much as she could. However, she prepared a sharp sword to protect herself. One day, she could no longer endure her husband's torture, so she stabbed him to death. And she cut her husband's body into pieces. She told her two sons, "Don't tell anyone." She made soup with her husband's head and fed it to her sons. While she was cutting his body into pieces, her neighbour heard her and asked her, "What are you doing? What is that?" She said, "Oh, my husband caught a deer. So I am cutting it into pieces. It is just a small deer." Her neighbour didn't suspect her at all. Then, the woman went to Danai town. She made a meat pickle from her husband's flesh. No one could find out the murder she committed. She sold the meat pickle at the Danai market. The pickle was cheap, so the soldiers of the No. 86 Burmese Brigade bought it for all their troops. They bought the meat pickle from her. They cooked it and fed it to the soldiers. One of the soldiers saw a finger in his meal. He told his captain, "Captain, I think the meat pickle is made of human flesh. There is a finger in my meal. What shall we do?" The captain said, "Oh! This is not right. We should catch her." They tried to search for her. But she was not at home. The woman and her two sons lived in the field. So, the soldiers called them and investigated the case. The two sons said, "We don't know anything." The woman also said, "No. It is an animal meat. My husband has gone into the forest." The soldiers and the village chief could not continue their investigation. So they made offerings to the Nat and asked about the case. The woman buried her husband's pillow under the banana tree. The pillow appeared after they asked Nat. Then, they assumed, "The murderer must be the woman." They arrested her. They took her two sons and asked them again, "We won't do any harm to you. Tell us." Then the elder boy said, "Mom killed Dad while he was unsteady from using drugs. She killed him with a sword." The woman was sentenced to life imprisonment at Myitkyina prison. And she died there.
