Title Ga mayu kau (The dishonest man) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son in a village. Her son was well-behaved and treated her well. He helped her doing farming. The widow was religious. She was religious. She always prayed to GOD. She and her son lived happily just by doing farming. One day, the son made bad friends. His friends were alcoholics. His friends made him drink alcohol. At first, he refused to drink. But later, he started drinking alcohol little by little. Their farm was taken by others due to debt. They had to live poorly. Then, the widow's son worked as a fisherman to earn some money. His mother always prayed for him to stop drinking alcohol. But he came back home drunk. He angrily said, "It's because of you! I don't get any fish because you pray!" He was mad at his mother. However, the mother kept praying for him. The next day, he went fishing again. But he couldn't catch any fish. When he arrived home, his mother was praying. He saw his mother was praying every day, so he got angry. The mother survived only because of the neighbours' help. She was old and couldn't work anymore. She stayed at home just by praying to GOD. One day, the son was angry x because he couldn't catch any fish the whole day. He didn't have money for alcohol, and his hands trembled with longing for it. So he was so angry and went back home. He shouted at his mother, "Why are you praying all the time? Give me some money instead of praying!" The mother said, "I have no money, my son. How do I have money? I don't have any money, my son." He shouted, "That's why I told you not to pray! I told you not to pray! I can't catch any fish because you pray! How many times do I need to tell you not to pray?" He was getting angry at his mother. After that, he went fishing again. But he couldn't catch any single fish. Day after day, his anger towards his mother grew. He went home to kill his mother. When he angrily went to his mother, she ran away from him. In the end, she saw him tired of chasing her. She felt pity for her son and thought, "My son is exhausted from chasing me. If he really wants to kill me, I will die for him." So she stopped running. At that time, he lifted his knife to strike his mother. As soon as he lifted his knife, he couldn't move his legs at all. His mother was shocked to see him. He was being swallowed. The ground was pulling him under. She thought, "My son is being swallowed by the earth." She prayed for him desperately. The son shouted, "Help me, please! Save me." But he was sinful. The villagers gathered around him and watched him. The ground was pulling him in little by little, day after day. He was thirsty and asked for water. When they gave him some water, it disappeared in front of him. The water evaporated suddenly. Soon, the ground split apart, and the fire below pulled him down.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,548 translations are currently available (February 25, 2025). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
