Description Translation (Htoi San)
Once upon a time, a couple had a baby in a town. The baby was the size of a forearm. The couple got a forearm-size baby. As soon as the baby was born, he did not suck the milk, but he requested his mother, "I want to eat rice." His mother was so amazed and fed him rice. The mother cooked two pounds of rice for him to eat. After a week, he said, "I am not enough with only two pounds of rice." So his mother cooked a sixteenth portion of a basket for rice. When he was almost a month old, he ate double portions of rice. After he was three to four months old, his mother had to cook triple portions. So the mother and the father discussed for him, "Our son can eat a lot of rice. We cannot provide for him as we are very poor. So shall we throw him in a far jungle?" They agreed, "Okay, can." Then the couple sent him to the very far jungle. They left him sitting on a tree. When the time was about a week, a man with perfect eyesight reached where the child was. The boy asked the man, "Hey, friend. Why are you coming here?" The man answered, "I have excellent eyesight, so I can see everything people do. Therefore, my village people don't like me and send me here." Another week passed, and another man came who was a crossbowman with very straight hands. They asked the arbalist, "Hey, friend. Why do you come to the jungle?" The arbalist answered, "I have very straight hands, so I shot wild animals and other people's chickens. As a result, the people from my village hate me and send me to this jungle." The three boys gathered as a group. While they stayed together, a man who was a fast runner with tiny legs arrived at them. They asked him, "Hey, friend. You don't even have legs, and why do you come here?" The runner replied, "I am a speedy runner, and when I run, I step on and kill people's chickens and pigs. Thus our villagers did not like me and sent me to this jungle." Another week, a man who had very flattened ears reached them. "Oh my! Friend, why do you reach where we stay?" asked the boys, and he responded, "My ears are very flat, so I step on with my ears and kill people's chickens and pigs when I walk through. Therefore our villagers did not like me and sent me here." The following week, a man who had a very big nose arrived. The boys asked him, "Hey, friend. Why did you arrive where we are?" The big-nose man answered, "I have a huge nose. When I breathe out, the air from my nose blows away people's valuable things. So they dislike me." They all lived together in that forest. They talked to each other, "if we stay together in this place, it will be difficult to find food. So let's move to another place." They all agreed and started their journey. They traveled until sunset. The friends told the good-eyesight man, as it was dark, "Hey, friend. You have bright eyesight, so can you see whether there is an animal for us to eat?" The sharp eyesight man looked and checked. "Hey, friend. Hey, friend. There is a red deer on a mountain," replied the bright-eyed man. The man, whose body was forearm-sized, gave an idea, and he said, "If so, the straight crossbowman, you shoot it." As the straight arbalist got an order to shoot, he shot the crossbow and hit the deer. The forearm-sized man said, "Now, the fast runner, go and check whether the deer died or not." The fast runner ran and saw, "It is dead." Among them, a mighty man came and joined them. So the forearm-sized man asked him to go when he heard the deer was dead, "If so, the strong man, go and carry it back." After bringing it back, they ate all the meat until only horns were left then they slept. While they slept, the forearm-sized man asked, "The very flattened ear man, place your ears on the ground." When he put his ears on the ground, they slept on one ear and out on another. The following day, they got up and continued their journey. On their journey, they accidentally went into a war against two kings. One king requested their help, "If you fight with me to get my country back, I will give you power and position." "I will give you my throne and my daughter," promised the king. When the king said, "I will give you all the positions below me, and I can even give you the king's position. Moreover, I can give you my daughter, and whoever gets my daughter will be the king," they discussed. After their discussion, they agreed, "Let's get involved in the fighting." The short man advised, "Let's fight for him." "If so, let's march tomorrow. Fight like this. Do like that. Like this," the forearm-sized man gave the instruction. The man who was perfect at shooting crossbows took in the war shooting his crossbow. The very good eyesight man looked where the enemies were. The speedy runner ran into the enemy expeditiously and stepped and killed them. The considerable ear man swung his ears and killed them. The big nose man breathed out the air to blow away and kill them. The powerful man lifted and threw them to kill. Therefore, they won the battle. When they defeated the enemy, the king called them. The king said to them, "We won the battle because you helped us. Therefore, I will give my daughter to one of the perfect men." Then he looked at them. The king thought, "If I let the crossbowman marry my daughter, she will feel lonely when the husband goes hunting." The king looked at the big ear man and thought, "If I give my daughter to the huge ear man, she will be scared of him." He did not satisfy any of the others and, at last, "Alright, I will give my daughter to the strongest man among you all." The most muscular man was relatively short. The king announced, "I let my daughter marry the strongest man but short." After that, the king did the wedding ceremony for them and gave his throne to the most muscular man. In the end, they all lived happily ever after.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
