Title Jahkrai hkan dwi (The Orphan and the Dragon) with English translation
Description Translation (Htoi San)
A long time ago, there was a grandmother and grandchild. They lived in a village, and they were so poor. Although they were indigent, grandmother had three hundred kyats. The whole house had only three hundred kyats. The boy wandered around the village and found people hitting a dog fiercely. The boy took pity on the dog. Due to his sympathy, he stopped them, "Please don't beat the dog." He continued, "I will buy it." The people who hit the dog asked, "How much can you give?" Then he offered, "One hundred kyats." As he said he would give one hundred kyats, they agreed, "Okay, give the money, then we don't beat it." Therefore, the orphan boy went back to his grandma and said, "Granny, I rescued a dog because people hit it very hard. So please give me one hundred kyats." The grandma told him, "What can we do with the dog?" "We only have three hundred kyats." But the boy insisted, "Granny, please give me. It is only one hundred kyats." The grandmother loved her grandson so much and gave one hundred kyats to him. When grandma said, "The dog can't be used," the boy replied, "The dog can watch our house." The grandma took out one hundred kyats so the boy could buy and bring the dog home. After that, the orphan boy wandered around again and found people trying to kill and eat a cat. The boy stopped them, "Please don't beat and kill the cat." He told them, "I will buy it." "I will give one hundred kyats." He returned to his grandma and got the money to save the cat. He walked around and found a small dragon captured in a glass water tank. When he saw that dragon, he thought, "Oh dear! This dragon looks so sorrowful as it should be in a wide water area, but it is now in a small water tank. It is so pitiful." Then he asked the house owner, "Please give me this dragon." The owner asked, "How much can you give?" The boy answered, "I will buy it with one hundred kyats." "If so, you can get it," agreed the owner. The boy took the money from his grandma and spent all three hundred kyats from his grandma. When he took the dragon home and placed it, it could change into a human. The baby dragon talked to the boy from the water tank. The dragon said, "I am so glad you saved me. You are my savior." One day, he walked out with the dragon together as friends. As the dragon could change into a human, it lived around with people. One day, the dragon said to the boy, "I want to bring you to my parents." "How far is your parent"s house?" asked the boy, and the dragon answered, "My parent's house is in the lake." "You follow me," said the dragon, and the boy agreed, "Alright." Then he came after the dragon. The dragon told the boy when they reached the lake, "Now close your eyes." "Close your eyes and hold my leg, then follow me. You need to close your eyes just for a while, and then we will get to our parents' house." After telling the routine, the dragon brought the boy down to the lake. When they got near the dragon's parent's house, it hit the boy and told its parents, "Mother and Father, I bring a human being. Please don't harm him." "He saved my life. When the people caught me and locked me in a small area, he bought me to rescue me for my life. He is my benefactor." Its parents did not say anything rather than, "Alright! We are happy to hear that. We need to give thanks to him." The orphan boy stayed two or three days at the dragon's house. After three days, the dragon needed to send the orphan boy home. The dragon's parents told their son, "You have to send the boy home, then we will give packed rice for lunch today." The parents packed the lunch and informed them, "Don't eat this on the way. Only open it when you reach the boy's home." Then they gave it to them. The orphan and the dragon went back together. They traveled through the lake, and when they came out from it and reached home, they said, "Let's eat rice!" They opened the rice packet with the grandma and found gold stones inside. The rice packet turned into gold stones, and the orphan boy and his grandma got many gold rocks. The low-income family was so glad to get many gold blocks, and the dragon still lived with them. The boy and his dragon friend went around the village again and met a girl of a wealthy father. The boy told the dragon, "I like that girl. I love that rich daughter." The small dragon answered, "Go and ask her from her parents. If you ask, they will give her to marry you." The boy told his grandma that he loved the rich man's daughter and asked her to go to the rich man's house. The grandma told the rich man, "My grandson loves your daughter." The wealthy man got angry immediately and responded to the grandma, "Such poor people like you and your grandson! You are not worth it with my daughter. How dare you ask for her?" Then the father cut slantwise to the grandma's ear. Thus the grandma's ear was cut, and no ear was attached. The grandma picked up her ear and covered her ear place, then went back home. When the grandma got home, the grandson asked her, "What did the rich man reply?" The grandma showed her ear cut and said, "Look here. He cut my ears slantwise and was furious about asking his daughter to marry you." The baby dragon took the cut ear and joined her ear back with its saliva. Thus the grandma's ear was attached back and got back to normal. Then the boy told granny, "Grandma. Go and ask again." So the grandma went again to ask for the rich man's daughter. "My grandson asked me to go and ask for your daughter again," told grandma. The wealthy man was amazed that the granny's ear, which he cut, was grown. Then the rich father asked, "How come your grandma and grandson want my daughter?" He continued, "How rich do you think you are so that you ask for my daughter?" Then he thought as the ear was fine again, "Some unusual things might happen to them." The rich man told the grandma, "If you want my daughter, you have to place a gold carpet on the way from your house to mine. Can you do that? Moreover, you have to plant gold banana trees beside the road along the way. I will give my daughter to your grandson if you can do that." The old granny went back and told her grandson about this, "We have to cover the way from our house to theirs with a gold carpet." "We also have to plant gold banana trees on the way. Only we can do this, and he will give his daughter." The grandson agreed, "I can do that! I can do that!" The dragon also said, "Grandma, no worries. I can do this for you." Then it placed the gold carpet. They put on the gold carpet until it got to the rich man's house pure gold. After they planted the gold banana trees, they asked grandma, "You can go and ask again now." This time, the rich man gave his daughter. They went back after getting the rich man's daughter. They still had a lot of gold. The dragon gave more gold and said, "Now, I need to go back to my parents. I also got a wife for you." In the end, the dragon returned to its father and mother.
