Title N hkru ai hpang num (Mother who became a tortoise) with English translation
Description Translation (Htoi San)
Once upon a time, a man had a former wife and a second wife. The second wife was very wicked. There was a daughter from the first wife. After getting the daughter from the first wife, the second wife also had a daughter of her own. One day, the wicked wife persuaded the first wife, "Let's go and pick wood near the pond." She brought the first wife to pick wood. When they reached the pool, the young wife pushed the elder wife into the water. The first wife became a tortoise and lived in that pool. After the first wife died and turned into a tortoise, the wicked wife tortured the first wife's daughter. Every day, the stepmother beat the first daughter and did not feed her well. Thus the first daughter cried at the lake where her mother was pushed and killed as she knew it. As her mother turned into the tortoise, she talked to her mother. "Mummy, stepmother beats me a lot." "She does not feed me, so I am starving. I face a lot of difficulties," she wept and said to her mother. The mother tortoise eased her sadness, "My child, be patient and stay strong. Just be patient for a while." The daughter said to her mother, "Mom, I don't know what to do because you have become a tortoise." Then the daughter went back home. The stepmother knew the first girl went to the pond and cried whenever she was beaten or scolded. One day, the stepmother was curious, "Whom did she meet with? Whom did she talk with?" Then she followed the way where the first daughter wept and went. She found the girl and went to the pond, where she pushed the first wife and became the tortoise and talked to her tortoise mother. Thus the wicked wife went home and told her husband while pretending herself sick, "If I eat the tortoise mother meat from the pond over there, I will be better. So could you please catch it for me?" The husband replied, "If you are getting better, I can catch that tortoise mother easily." After that, he went to the pond to catch the mother tortoise. He caught the tortoise and steamed it in the wooden barrel. The mother tortoise asked her daughter to reduce the fire. The stepmother ordered the first daughter to keep up the fire while her mother tortoise was inside the wooden steamer. The mother tortoise from the wooden steamer said, "My child, please don't put too much wood. I feel hot. I am feeling very hot." The girl did not keep the fire up and take the wood out. When the stepmother saw this, she hit the girl and forced her, "Why don't you raise the fire? Put it back! Put it back faster!" "It's hot! It's hot! It's hot! It's hot!" The mother tortoise was so hot, and she instructed her daughter. "Oh my! Don't put out that much fire. You don't eat my flesh if I die due to the heat." "If they eat my meat, you take my bones and bury them nicely in front of the house." At last, the mother tortoise died because of the fire. That night, the whole family ate tortoise meat. While the family ate happily, the first daughter did not eat the meat as her mother had told her. As she did not eat the meat, the stepmother hit her, so she pretended to eat the meat. When they had finished eating, she collected all the bones and buried them in front of the house as her mother instructed. A beautiful tree grew where her mother's bones were buried. That tree grew beautifully with gorgeous fruits. The fruits from that tree were also very pretty. The fruits appeared like apples and gold, and they bore beautifully. One day, a king and his followers passed by their house while wandering the country. The king saw gorgeous fruits which looked delicious on the tree, so he ordered his runners to pick the fruits from that tree. However, the maids could not pick the fruits. Whoever from the king's maids tried to pluck the fruits but the fruits did not fall off. Therefore the king said, "Whosoever can pick the fruits, I will award him. If the person is a girl, she will be a queen." But no one could pluck the fruits. The first daughter plucked the fruits and gave them to the king. After that, she became the king's wife. Then she got into the palace as she became a queen. After being queen, she wore beautiful dresses and stayed in the palace for three years. One day, the stepmother requested the first daughter, "Come and visit our house to meet us." After three years, she told the king, "My stepmother asked me to come back home to meet her." The queen prepared to visit her stepmother after the king had agreed to her. As the first daughter was the queen, she wore the queen's clothes and many golds and returned home beautifully. The stepmother planned to do evil things to her. The wicked mother greeted her stepdaughter joyfully and invited her to lunch. Then she cooked rice. After cooking, she said, "Let's eat together." She also boiled a big pot of hot water. Then they ate together. The stepmother pinched her youngest child and made her cry. The evil mother told the queen, "The baby is crying. Please take out your necklace to ease her." The queen said, "Alright." Then she took out her necklace and made her sister over. The stepmother pinched and made the baby cry again, "The baby is asking for your bracelet." One after one, the wicked mother asked for the queen's jewelry, saying, "Please support the baby's crying. Let her hold them." The mother let the baby drop the gold jewelry under the house. Then she said, "We are done eating now. My child! Your youngest sister dropped all your ornaments. Can you go and pick them?" When the stepmother asked the queen, "Go and take them up," the mother already boiled a big pot of hot water ahead. The wicked mother poured down the hot water while the queen was under the house. As a result, the queen died due to the hot water. The evil mother took out all the queen's clothes and put them on her second daughter, then let her go to the king. The second daughter wore the queen's costume and went into the palace, so people thought she was the queen. The king lived together with the second daughter, who pretended to be a queen. When the king went out, the food was prepared already. The rice and curry were on the table together with water. The food was placed on the table nicely every day, but the king was amazed that no one could be found. The king thought sincerely, "How come it happened? The queen is following me, and we go out together. Who made the food and placed it on the table?" Nevertheless, the fake queen pretended to be the one who made the food. She simulated being the one who cooked the food. The king asked the fake queen to go to another place, and he also pretended to go out. The king came back after a while and planned, "I will peep who prepares the food daily." Then he peeped from the doorway and found another queen coming out from the wide pot. She combed her hair, put makeup on, and made herself tidy, then started to cook. She cooked all the food which they liked to eat and placed them on the table. She also put a water bottle and set them all nicely, then changed her clothes and went back into the big pot. The king was so surprised. The king was amazed and thought, "What are these all about? Who is that queen?" When the first daughter died from the bride-giving clan, the stepmother shopped the dead queen's flesh, fermented it, and sent it as a gift to the king. When the people from the palace ate the fermented meat, they found pieces of nails. The king marked that incident. The king was confused, "What is this queen?" The two queens were sisters, so the king could not recognize who was the real one. The king was astonished that another queen had prepared the food. The king peeped the next day and he determined, "Today, I will make sure to catch her." When he hid and watched her, another queen came out from the wide pot and changed her outfits to be neat and tidy like a queen then she started cooking. When she was almost finished and went back to the wide pot, the king ran out of his hiding place behind the door and instantly caught her. He held her tightly and asked, "Who are you?" The other queen answered, "I am your wife." "Oh! Who is the one coming then?" questioned the king, and the other queen replied, "She is my sister." "What is happening to you now?" continued asking the king. The other queen answered, "I am the spirit, and I become the spirit." "They killed me by pouring the hot water and letting the woman who is coming now wear my clothes and send her here." The king was stunned. The spirit queen and the fake queen were similar, and the king was confused, "I have to test you who the real queen is." They both said, "Let's test! Let's test us!" Therefore, the king arranged a competition. The king gathered all the people and announced to them, "Now, there are two queens, so we have to check them. Let's watch!" The king placed spears on the ground and said the rules, "Alright! You are my real wife if you can jump over these spears." So they both jumped over the spears. Firstly, the fake queen jumped across the spears. As soon as she jumped over, she fell on the spears and died. When the spirit queen jumped over, she could reach the end. In the end, the king knew who the real queen was. Here is the end of the story.
