Title Kabai kau hkrum ai kanu (The abandoned mother) with English translation and notes
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son in a village. Her son got married when he grew up. Then, the three of them lived together in the same house. But her daughter-in-law didn't like her. The daughter-in-law told her husband, "Let's abandon your mother." They didn't cure their mother even when she was sick. Then, the mother became weaker and weaker. When she told her son that she wanted to have a meal, he didn't feed her anything. They did it intentionally because they wanted their mom to die. Then, the mother became gradually thin and weak. One day, the daughter-in-law told her husband, "Your mom might die soon, so let's abandon her somewhere. I don't want her to die in this house." Then, the son carried his mom in order to abandon her. When he carried her, she took a branch with leaves. She dropped each leaf along the road so as not to lost the way. When they reached deep inside the forest, the son asked her, "Mom, why are you dropping each leaf on the way?" She said, "I am doing it for you so you do not get lost on the way back. I am afraid you might get lost on your way back home." When he heard her words, he regretted his actions and took her back home. He looked after her well since then.
