Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell is about how (people) getting to know to bury when a person died. In the past, people didn't know how to bury the body even when a person died. People just buried the dead body without wrapping or covering it up well. They just buried the body. Then, one day, an old woman passed away (in a village). She died. Then the villagers thought to ask to the neighbouring villages. They thought to make a coffin to put her dead body by asking them. But they didn't have any knives. During that time, no one had knife and no one used it. They were just going happily together without having any knives on their way to the neighbouring villages. At that time, there was a married couple (in that village). The couple had got a son and a daughter. Then, the boy went fishing with a fish trap made of bamboo in a stream. He usually went fishing with a bamboo fishing trap and got fish. Commonly, he went to collect fish which were caught in a bamboo fishing trap. But he let his younger sister go and collect fish this morning. He let his sister go and collect fish. Then his sister collected fish from the bamboo fishing trap and went back home. Then, on her way back home, a preta annoyed, provoked and teased her since it wanted to eat those fish. She was so angry since a preta provoked her. When she got home, she told her brother about this. When she told her brother, he was so angry too. So, the next morning, he got dressed his sister clothes and acted like his sister. Then he went to collect fish from the bamboo fishing trap. When he went there, there was actually a preta which was waiting for fish. It thought that would be that girl, so it came out from the forest and hugged her. When the preta hugged the boy, he immediately grabbed it and took it to home. He thought he could sell it. He shouted in a village that he would sell this preta no matter how much he got. Then that preta told the boy not to sell it and not to do anything to it. It told him just let it go and asked him if he wanted money. And it told him, "If you want to get a lot of money and to be rich, go and build many pigsties, cowsheds and coops. Build those closely." The boy really believed that preta's words, so he let it go. He let the preta go and did what the preta told. Then, there were full of cows, pigs and chickens in his cowsheds, pigsties and coops. And there was another boy who wanted to feed whatever he had to the other people in that village. That boy wanted to give whatever he had got to his neighbours. But he didn't give that food right in the hands of his neighbours. He went to the neighbours' houses without being seen and hung the food on the door of his neighbours secretly. He hung that food on the door of his neighbours'. Then, he had hung the food on the gate of that boy's pigsties, coops and cowsheds. He thought to put the food at the corner of the house's door or to just hang the food on the door, but the door creaked loudly as it opened. So he just hung the food on the gate of those cowsheds since he didn't want to make a loud noise. He hung the food there. Then when the cows came into the cowsheds at night, all the cows ran away without going in to the cowsheds because they were afraid of that food hanging there. Since all the cows ran away, he didn't have any cows left. Then the boy who owned those cows was so angry. He felt so sad and angry. Then, the preta got to know about that and told him not to feel sad and angry and that he would get all back. And it told him to do farming and grow vegetables on it. Then, he did farming as the preta told him to do. And he grew crops on it. Then there grew plenty of vegetables on his farm and they were growing bigger. So he slept on the farm to guard since he was afraid that if someone came to steal or destroy the crops. That preta went there to check since it wanted to know if the boy did what it told or not. So it sneaked a peek from the up side of the farm. But the boy, the owner of the farm, thought it might be one of the wild beast and shot it. When he shot with a crossbow, the preta was struck. Then it felt so hurt and groaned. When the boy heard that groaning sound of the preta, he asked if that is a preta. But the preta didn't say anything and just ran away. It was so hurt and lay on the street on the way of running back to its place. It was just going to die soon. Then, the people who went to the other village (people that were mentioned at the beginning) saw it. Since they were also merchants, it asked them if they wanted to get lots of money and wanted to grow their business well. And it said to them, "If you want to get rich and lots of money, please bury me." They told it, "We don't know how to bury you." Then it told them to go into the forest first. When they went into the forest, they saw leaves of banana plants and bunch of bamboo plants and an eagle flying in the sky. They saw those things and came back. Then the preta asked them what they saw in the forest. They also told what they saw there. "We didn't see anything that we can use to bury you. We have seen only banana's leaves, bamboos and a flying eagle," they told it. Then it told them, "That's enough if you saw those. Go and cut some bamboos and make a coffin for me. Bury me by putting inside it. And look at the banana's leaves. Carry me by looking at banana's leaves (the way it builds)." "And dance by looking at the way how the eagle flies," it told them. They actually buried that preta as it told. They held a funeral for the preta like they were its family members. When the other people saw that, they thought that even they were not the preta's family, they held a funeral for the preta. The other people were so grateful for them since they held a funeral. So they gave money to them to help. Then, they helped each other in many ways when there was a funeral. The people who got to learn about this went back to their village and buried that old woman the same like they did to the preta. Since then, people have been helping each other by giving money or in some other ways for the purpose of encouraging when there is a funeral in one's family.

E dai wa si re na she oh htingbu kahtawng de e htingbu kahtawng de ndai shi hpe lup makoi na matu i shi hpe bang na matu du u ni hpe gaw masha ni e sa san nna galaw na kun ngu na mung shanhte myit yu ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
