Many years ago, there was a Shan family in a village. In that Shan family, the wife got pregnant. She did not deliver even though it was due for nine months. Furthermore, the baby did not come out even though it was ten months until it reached twelve months. The mother delivered the strong baby when it was one year in his mother's womb. The husband cut the bamboo tree for a bamboo water vessel and went down to the valley to get water. At home, the wife delivered the baby, and as soon as he came out, he asked, "Mother, I am so hungry. Give me rice. I am so starving." As soon as he was born, he asked for food. Therefore, the mother put the rice on a plate like a mountain. Then she gave her son, "Here you go." The boy ate all the rice from the plate until it was all clear. After that, he asked, "Where is Father?" He asked after eating, "Where is my father going?" The mother answered him, "Your father is going to get a bamboo water vessel." Mother continued, "You go and follow the water way." The boy followed the exact way of his father. He met with his father on the way. The father carried bamboo water vessels and met his son. The son greeted and introduced him, "Are you my father?" The son helped his father take bamboo water vessels and returned home together. From that day onwards, they named their son a strong boy. In their village, that strong boy helped in all ways to the others. The village head was jealous of him as he assisted in whatever the villagers needed without restriction. The village head thought, "This child might take me down from my position." "So I will definitely kill him." The village chief asked him to go to the monster country to get the debt for gold. Actually, the giant country was a place to kill people. When they saw humans, they all killed the people. The chief ordered the strong boy to go there. The strong boy accepted the chief order and went to the monster country, bringing along his three friends. On their way, after they had walked quite far, they found a man clearing the forest with his shin. The man did not use a knife or a hoe but used his shin to clear the wild place when they saw this and asked him, "Hey, friend! Can you tell us this is the way to the monster country?" That man replied, "I don't know." "Ahh, you don't know?" said the strong boy, and he fastened the man's shins with his elbows. Thus the man who used his shin to clear the jungle shouted with pain, "I will tell. I will tell you now." After the strong boy released the man, he told the way to the monster country. After that, they continued their journey. When they arrived at another place, they saw a man fishing with an elephant. When they saw the man tied the net to the elephant and fishing, they asked him, "Hey friend who is fishing with the elephant, can you tell us the way to the monster country?" The man who fished with the elephant did not respect them and replied, "I don't know." He answered with disrespect. "Ahh, you don't want to say it," said the boy, and he clipped his arms to the man's shin. As he fastened the man's shin, he screamed and screamed of the pain of breaking up his shin. At last, he said, "I will tell." Then he showed the way. "This way after that, this way," the man who fished with the elephant showed the way. Then the boys continued their journey. After they reached the sea, the shores were on this side and another side. Then they also found a man who spread out his legs and walked beside the seaside. They did not know how to go, "Oh my! How are we supposed to cross this?" They asked the man who stretched out in the sea, "Hey friend, is this the way to the monster country? Please show us because we are lost." That man answered with disregard, "I don't know." Then the boy clipped the man's shin like before, "Alright, you don't want to tell us." That man also responded, "Okay, I will tell. I will tell you." After that, he told them the way. The strong boys kept going on their journey. They reached roughly to the monster kingdom. When they arrived at the giant kingdom, the strong boy did not go straight into the town. He just stayed outside the city and sent his three friends to one older adult's house. When the three friends went to the monster woman from the monster country, that woman fed them with a medicine that made them turn into pigs or animals in their food. After changing into pigs, his friends stayed underneath the house. He went to the older woman's house as his friends did not come out. When he got to that woman's house, she prepared to give him food and asked him to set the fire. The woman told him while he blew the fire, "Hey, my grandson, there is a Chyingma tree among the wood so that it can cause your eyes to sputter." "So when you blow the fire, close your eyes. If not, Chyingma tree woods sputter your eyes." The strong boy did not listen to the older adult, opened his eyes, and blew out the fire. He saw the older woman try to hit and kill him with a hammer from behind. Thus he forcedly clipped the woman's hands with his hands. He fastened tightly until the old woman could not bear the pain and said, "I won't do that anymore." The strong boy questioned her, "Where did you put the three humans I sent? Take them out quickly!" The woman answered, "They are down there." When he looked down, they all were pigs. "Change them into humans again, the same as before. Furthermore, weigh the gold for one tan," ordered the strong boy. The woman took out the medicine which could turn animals into humans and gave the three pigs, then they all transformed into humans again. "Now, give back a ton of gold," said the strong boy. So the woman weighed the gold and returned it to them. But the boy did not release the clipping with his hands and said, "Give us the medicine which you use." "Give it to us!" ordered again, and the woman was scared and took out the medicine shakingly. The strong boy and his friends opened the woman's mouth, pressed, and forcefully put the medicine, making humans into pigs. They made the woman swallow it, and the woman changed into a pig from that onwards. The four friends went back to their country happily with a ton of gold.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
