Title U hpung hka yang sharaw kawa wa (The man bitten by a tiger) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
A long time ago, there were two travellers. As it was getting dark on the way, they had to sleep in the forest. While they were taking a rest there, they were thinking a lot. Their thoughts were different. One man said to his fellow, "Let's sleep on the tree." But the other man didn't agree with him. And he said, "No, let's not sleep on the tree. Let's sleep on the grave." (There was a structure-like house that was built on the grave in the past.) He said, "Let's sleep inside it." Then, the first man didn't want to sleep on the grave. So, he hung a basket on the tree and slept inside there. And another man slept on the grave. At night, a tiger was coming toward them. One man said, "My friend, people say 'united we stand, divided we fall.' Let's sleep together." The man who was sleeping on the tree didn't agree and slept on his own. They were sleeping in different places. The one who was on the grave was sleeping soundly and peacefully. At night, the moon was shining and the wind was blowing. Then, the basket was moving left and right. The tiger saw only the shade of the basket and tried to catch it. No matter how hard it tried to catch it, it couldn't. Then, it looked up at the tree and saw the basket hanging there. So, it pounced on the basket and killed the man inside. The Kachin people have a saying, 'United we stand, divided we fall'. This is the end of the story.
