Title La kaja gam du yang wa ndu yup nga ai (The poor man) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I will tell is about a saying, 'When good luck comes to a man, even a boar gets sleepy.' Once upon a time, there was a poor man. He was penniless. He thought, "I need to go to the market, but I have no money. What should I buy? There is even a saying, 'When great good luck comes to a man, even a boar gets sleepy'. I believe GOD will help me." Then, he started his way to the market. On his way, he walked past a paddy field. He saw that a man was trying to plough the field with his pair of cows, but the cows didn't move forward. They were heading toward him all the time. He was tired of hitting the cows to move forward. Then, he saw the poor man who was going to the market. He asked him, "I can't plough the field. My cows are not moving forward no matter how hard I hit them. They are heading toward me. What should I do? Help me." When the poor man took a look at the cows, he knew that the man was just stupid. Then, he pretended to divine. He told him, "My friend, your cows are bewitched by two nats called Sangawk and Sanga. We need to offer chickens and pigs to those nats so that your cows will work properly." The man believed him and said, "Okay, wait here. I will go get my chicken and pig." Then, the poor man put the yoke on the cows' necks and the rope inside their noses. After a while, the field owner came back. He brought some chickens and a pig and walked to him. The poor man said, "Cook the chicken and rice. I will offer this pig to the nats." Then, he pulled the pig and tied it to the tree on the way to the market. He hid the pig there. They ate rice and chicken curry together. The poor man told the stupid man, "Your cows will work properly now. I give offerings to Sangawk and Sanga, so you can plough the field with your cows well." The stupid man could plough the field well. There is a saying in Kachin, 'GOD help a good man.' Although you don't have anything, GOD will give you food.
