Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
We can't look directly at the sun. In the past, the sun told the moon, "I am the girl, so I feel shy to move around the earth in the daytime. I will just walk around at night." The sun said, "I feel shy to walk around the earth even though I am a boy." They were arguing over who would walk around the earth in the daytime. Then, GOD told them, "You two can't argue like that all the time. Since people will need the sunlight more, Take this porcupine while you walk. Then, people couldn't look directly at you." The sun took the porcupine every time she walked around the earth. People can't look directly at the sun because of the brightness of the porcupine.

Ya ndai jan hpe shi a hkum hkrang hkrak pra pra nmu lu ai gaw ndai jan hte shata yan wa she lani mi na hta gaw "Nang she shani hkawm u nga" nre jan jan gaw "Ngai gaw shana num kasha re majaw ngai gaw mungkan masha ni e grai yu gaya ngai nhkawm lu ai mungkan ga mungkan masha ni man de nhkawm lu ai ngai shana hkawm na nngai" nga. Dai she shata mung "E ngai gaw la re gaw grau shani gaw nkam hkawm ai gaya ai" nga. Shan gaw dan rai myit nawng nga yang she ndai Karai Kasang gaw "Aw nang dai hku nawng jang gaw kaning nga timung shinggyim masha gaw nang jan jan hpe she grau akyu jashawn manu shadan na re. Ndai mungkan ga shinggyim masha ni hpang de gaw ndai nang shamyit shabawn htawng nna hkawm u yaw. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
