Title Mali hka gyip kaw masha hkrat si ai lam (The spirit in the Mali river) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita)
In the past, people worshipped Nat spirits. At that time, we had to be very careful of whatever we did or said. There was Mali Hka (river) in Kachin State. In some places, the river was narrow. A grown-up man could even jump over. Then, there were seven merchants who had to go pass that place. When one of the merchants jumped over it, he fell down into the water and disappeared. One by one jumped over it, but they all fell into the river and didn't appear. Then, there was only one merchant left. He thought, "There's no way that it will be usual. There might be an owner of this place." So, he threw his slippers to the other side of the river first. And he jumped over it with all of his effort. Then, he could pass it. He went back to the village and told villagers about what had happened to his friends.

That's all about how people died there. Our Mighty GOD had created our Kachin land as a beautiful place with lots of tress and forests. The government widened the narrow parts of the river to be convenient for the ships to sail when they traded goods. They cleared many trees. In rainy season, the ships can sail there. But the river gets narrower, and the big ships couldn't go pass in summer. Our elders thought about it. If there aren't any trees and river, there is no way that our Kachin land will be nutritious and good enough for farming. When they tried to widen the river, there had floods and trees blocking their action. It was because Nat spirits which ruled there didn't like that. So, they couldn't widen the river. Our elders used to say about it.

Dai majaw kahkan le marai 7 re she langai mi bai hka hkan dat yang mung hka de prung rai, langai bai ya ngai bai ngu she, ngai bai naw di yu ga ngu yang she, dai wa bai kahkan dat yang hka de bai brung rai, langai a hpang langai 6 ting dai de laing de di hkrat shang mat ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
