The two smart daughters and their father. For a long time, there was a man, who has a wife, later she died and the man remarried another woman. This second wife was evil. It may be common sense that the second wife in the past was not honest. The man had two daughters with his late wife and the youngest one was still toddle and the oldest was already grown up as a child level. And the wife told her husband, "Hey... husband, "Better you throw your two daughters into the forest because it's very difficult for us to feed them every day since we have so many children and we can't afford to feed them either." But the husband wouldn't do that. He also said to his wife, "I couldn't do such a cruel thing." So, the wife said, "Why not?" She kept threatening her husband by saying, "Either you break up with your children or you want to break up with me, choose yourself." As a man, it was hard to separate from their wife, and also, the husband did not dare to isolate his wife. Therefore, the man thought, I should separate my children instead of leaving my wife. Then he called his kids into the forest to shoot the birds. The older girl heard the conversation between the father and her stepmom. She didn't doubt, "Ffather would throw us into the forest with my little sister." Then, the father said to his two little girls, "Let's go to the forest early in the morning." The daughter realized, "My father and stepmother didn't want us anymore," but she didn't tell her little sister. The next day, early morning, they went into the forest, but the girl was smart because she grew up enough to think everything. On leaving the house, the little girl marked the small stone all the way. The two daughters followed their father and dropped the small stone to remember the way to return home. Then they arrived in the deep forest. The girl kept dropping the little rock and just followed their father. When they arrived somewhere in the deep forest, the father said, "Kids, I couldn't get any prey today, so you just stay here for a while." But he wasn't a hunter. He just lied to his children. So, the father was about to leave his children in the midst of the forest. The daughter understood the actions of her father and she said, "Okay, dad." Then the father went back to his house by another path. Almost at sundown, the father did not pick up the two daughters, but the eldest daughter already knew because she had heard the conversations of her parents. Then the girl said to her little sister, "Dad couldn't take us back home, maybe he lost his way and went home." But she kept saying, "Don't worry, I know how to get back, let's go home." Because the girl didn't want her little sister to know about the wickedness of their father's attitude toward them as she had a good heart. The two girls went home after following the small stones which marked their arrival in the forest. Then they came back safely to their house. That evening, their father and stepmother quarreled. The stepmother was furious with her husband and accused that he could not dump his daughters in the forest. She also said, "A worthless husband and I don't want to be with you anymore." "You shouldn't be saying that," the husband told his wife in a loud voice. Then the woman got mad and said, "You brought them back, it was completely unacceptable because I didn't want them to live with us." The husband said, "It wasn't me that brought them home. They knew how to make it home." But the wife yelled at her husband, "Tomorrow, you will send them back again." So, the husband replied, "It was so cruel to get rid of these poor kids like that." The wife responded immediately, "You could not do it because you have a gentle heart." Then, the woman warned him seriously, "Tomorrow, you have to return them to the forest. If you don't, then choose between me or your children." He worried also as a man; it was hard to get away from the wife. The husband spoke in a soft voice, "if you did not want them, I would send them again to the forest." The girl found out that tomorrow the father would go into the forest again and throw them away. The girl felt very sad because she often heard in her bedroom that the parent was fighting because of them. The next day, earlier in the morning, the daughter asked before the father called her, "Dad, you're going out hunting in the forest today." Then the father said, "I'm not going to hunt in the forest today." The father purposely told his daughter to be satisfied with them. Then the girl said, "Like yesterday, we wanted to follow the forest to see your hunting wild animals, let's go." The father said, "Well, if you want to go, let's go." The next day, when the daughter persuaded her father to go out, actually he hesitated to do so. Eventually, he took his kids out in the forest. Then they went into the deep forest as before. So, the father told his children to wait here that he was going to hunt somewhere else. Although the girl did not tell her younger sister that the father had already dumped us here, she understood everything. When the sun went down, the father left them alone in the forest, so they just walked around with no idea where they were headed. At last, they found a house. They saw an old woman alone in the house and greeted her. Then the girl told about their stepmother's wickedness for them. "Now she didn't want us anymore afterour mother died and the father disowned us too." But the old lady replied, "All right, all right." The old lady was a demonic old lady. She was satisfied that it was good for her that the two children came there when she is hungry. The girl was well enough to know everything but, the younger sister was still young and did not know anything yet. The younger sister said, "Look, the house is so beautiful, and are we going to stay here?" She was so excited. The little sister was looking cute with chubby body shape. Then, the old lady locked up the little sister in the room. Then she told the older sister: "The sun was almost down, go to draw water to fill the large pot." Then you light the fire and put the pot over the fire to boil it." Within minutes, the water boiled, the girl asked the old lady, "Grandma, the boiling water was ready to be used, what are you doing with that boiling water?" The girl was really clever. So, she realized that the demonic old woman wanted to eat her little sister. Therefore, she immediately locked her into the room and asked her to bring the water and boil it. The girl told her little sister, she knew that this demonic old lady wanted to eat both of them. She would eat you before she ate me. She told her little sister that "The demonic old woman was ready to kill you and eat you, but don't worry, I'll save you from her hand." The little sister had already been scared because her sister spoke about the situation. Then the old demonic woman was about to enter the room with the knife to kill her and cook with boiling water. So, the daughter called the demonic old woman, "Grandma... Grandma...just for a second, it's very important. Look, there's something in the pot, come here and look at it." Then the evil old lady said, "What is in it?" While she bent down and looked, the girl knocked her down in the pot of boiling water and she died. So, the older sister told her younger sister, "Come on, we can't stay here anymore." They left the house and met the elderly hunter on their way. The old man seems happy, but the little sister was afraid because she thought this old man also like the old demonic woman. But, the sister said, let me observe first because the sister has enough knowledge to see things. After that, they entered the house and asked the old man, "Grandpa...Grandpa... are you staying alone here?" He answered, "Yes, I'm alone in this house." The younger sister asked curiously, "Are you a demon or a human being?" Grandpa said, "I am not demon, I am a human being. I was hunter years back, and now I'm a retired senior hunter. I also had no children." Then the two of them shared their sad story with the old man. As a result, the old man sympathized with them and invited them to stay with him. Both sisters also lived joyfully in the old man's home. Then, the daughter's father felt sorry for his children because they had disowned them in the forest. Actually he was not a hunter, but he sought his children in the deep forest because he thought he could find them. The father often went to the forest to find his children. One day, he unintentionally approached the old man's home in the forest. Suddenly, the two girls saw their father was coming to the house, and they ran up to the father with a loud voice, "Daddy..." "Oh... my daughters," the father cried when he saw his two children. They explained to him, they were very happy there. The daughter said, I thought by now that mom and dad were really happy without us. We also wished that our parent life be good. But the father told them, now your stepmother also repents of what she had done before, and now she has asked me to look you. The step-mom admitted she was wrong because she realized that no one was caring for her small children and also, she felt lonely without the two daughters of the first wife. She understood the big girl's love for all siblings and the way she cared for her younger sister, including her small children as well. Besides, the big girl and her little one left the house to keep her parents from fighting about them. She was such a smart girl who understood her parents. At last, the two daughters lived happily in the house of the old hunter, and the father was also satisfied with his children. The stepmother also repented from her action. They spent the rest of their lives very peacefully.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
