I tell the story about the women spirits (nat) of malevolence causing death during labor and Village headman "Lahpai La." This story was told a long time ago. If there was a village headman, it could have happened in reality, but it was just a story. Once upon a time, A village headman called "Lahpai La" prepared a farm for cultivation near a river. The women spirits were near where Lahpai La was working. Those women spirits saw Lahpai La's coming and going back to the farm. "How should we do with him? How should we tease him?" consulted each other. Then one day, when he came to the farm, the spirits made trouble for him. They blocked and blocked the way where he was on the way. He could not see him with his eyes, but he could not walk through. He could not walk straight forward, then he turned and walked, he could not pass. Only he could smell the creepers. The ancient older women used to say that if you could smell the creepers around an area of a narrow valley, that was the smell of Ndang spirits. At that time, it was also the smell of Ndang spirits as the creepers' smell. The village headman Lahpai La was smart. He straight away knew that it was the smell of Ndang, and they were teasing him. He said, "Why are you teasing me, Ndang spirits?" and he was angry. He took out his knife and tried to cut whatever he grasped as he was irate. He guessed that there would be many Ndang spirits, so he planned to hold and was about to strike, asking, "Why are you trying to stop me? Why are you teasing me?" - then Ndang spirits talked back to him. "E Village headman Laphai La, please don't kill us. We apologize for what we did to you. We will do whatever you want us to do, and you can do whatever you like." Thus, the village headman Lahpai La replied, "I want to see you." There was a small branch on the root of a big tree. The spirits asked him to pluck the leaf. So the village headman plucked that leaf. Then, he saw a crowd of Ndang spirits. It was a very big crowd. Hence, he said, "You let me do whatever I like, so let's go to my farm." He is bringing the spirits to his farm and giving work to do there. After the spirits worked there for two or three days, they felt tired and ran away. So the village headman searched for them as they escaped. The village headman looked for them as they fled to the next mountain. He straight away hunted them. He also picked and brought the leaf which could see them as he knew it. Then he found them. He brought them back as he found them. He asked them to do chores on his farm again. They had to do farm work there for three months. The village headman ordered them to work there, and he went back home for a while. During that time, the spirits run away again. As they were running away, the headman thought, "I want to make them slaves so that I have to find them." Then, he picked a leaf from the small tree on the root of the big tree and searched for them one more time. He went further than before, but he could not find them. So he went to the furthest place where he had never been before and found the women's spirits there. When he got there, the spirits talked to each other. "So hungry and miss "Gau Gut" water so much and want to eat rice." They chatted with each other. So the headman said, "Let's go back and drink "Gau Gut" water which you desire and eat what you miss," bringing those women's spirits back to his farm again. He kept them as slaves one more time. They had to do all the variety of jobs and labored for about three or four months. They were pretty smart this time. "This time, we have to make sure this headman can't find us. We already did a lot of what he liked. Now we have to do so that he can't order us to do his job again," the spirits said to each other and rooted the small tree out, which they showed him for the leaf to see them. Then, they escaped once more. The headman found out about their running away; he sought them again. He planned to slave them heavily, so he looked for the leaf and found they took out the tree from the root. Since then, the village headman Lahpai La never saw those women's spirits again.

Ndai moi da ndai hka kau kaw e ndai agyi lahpai la ngu ai wa gaw dai kaw yi hkyen na nga ai da. Yi hkyen na nga re yang she dai shi yi hkyen ai makau hkan e gaw ndang num ni mung nga na hku rai nga. Dan re nga re yang she shi gaw shani shagu yi sa yi wa galaw ai dai hpe she ndang num ni gaw mu Ndai wa hpe e anhte gara hku galaw na kun? gara hku sa tsang sha na kun ngu na ndang num ni dai hku na bawng ai da. Dai she lani mi na aten hta gaw shi yi de bai sa wa yang she ndang num ni wa shi hpe wa hkap sa tsang sai da e. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
