Once upon a time in a village, there was a couple, husband and wife, who did not have a child. The husband was quite lazy but he was good at fishing. The wife was also very lazy and just used to stay at home. She just cooked the fish that her husband brought. She sold some fish to buy rice while she cooked some fish for the curry. They also did not build a house and just lived under the trees happily. They felt very happy so. The husband just went fishing and backed home. The wife also just stayed at home without doing anything. She only had a duty to cook fish curry when her husband backed. They lived happily so for a while. They lived like that so getting poor and poor. One day, a guardian nat tested the couple. The guardian nat thought to himself that "This couple is just fishing the whole life. I think maybe they will just go like this for the rest of their lives as well. I need to take care of them." So, one day, when the husband went fishing, he got nothing even though he was fishing the whole day. He only got a very beautiful fish in the evening after sunset. It was a golden fish as it was very beautiful. The husband said to himself that "Ah.....when just it is almost dark, I just got such a tiny fish. But, I should take it." When he was about to take the fish, the fish spoke. "Hi human fisherman, even if you take me and cook for the curry, you will not full. So, pity me and leave me back to the water. Ask me whatever you want," said the fish. The fish continued that "Come again and again to ask me whatever you want, I will give you." The man said that "There is nothing to eat tonight so my wife will get angry with me." The fish asked, "Then, what do you want?" The man said, "I want food for tonight." So, the fish said the man to return home so the man returned home. When he got home, "You bring nothing? What we gonna eat tonight?" asked the wife. The husband said that "When I was fishing the whole day, I only got a very small fish. I was about to bring the fish but the fish apologized to pity him as it is also not enough to cook and eat. Then, the fish told me to ask whatever I want. So, when I told the fish about I want the food for tonight, he told me to return home." The wife asked, "So, where is the food?" Then, the husband recited that "Today's fish, we two have to eat food tonight. Give us the food as you told me today." At that time, they suddenly got the food that ready to eat. They both ate the food and fulled. On the next morning when they got up, the wife was more greedy and said to her husband that "Why don't you ask a house to live in? Why you just asked that food? Ask a very beautiful and magnificent house." The man also went again fishing the next day but he got nothing the whole day. So, he called the fish. "Little golden fish, come out to me" said the man. The fish came out and said "What do you want?" The man told the fish that "My wife said that she wants a very beautiful and magnificent house". Then, the fish told the man to return home. When the man got home, he saw a very beautiful and magnificent house there. After they had the house, the wife got angry again and again. The wife said that "You only asked about the house but you did not include to ask flowers and garden around the house. You also should ask the house with more windows." So, the man went again. He met with the golden fish and asked again as his wife said. The fish also told the man to return home again. When he got home, the house was now really beautiful with the flowers around the house. The wife was looking around the house again and again, and she was very happy with the beautiful house. But, they were hungry because there was nothing to eat. So, the wife got angry again and said that "If we only have the house and just looking the flowers, we don't full as there is no rice to eat. You also should ask about the food." So, the man went again. As usual, he met and asked the golden fish. The golden fish said, "Ok, ok, I understand what you said." When the man got home, they got food to eat and there was always the food whenever the time to eat. When they were living neatly in the house, they had to sweep broom. They had to polish the floor and also needed to watering the garden. There were many tasks to do so the couple never felt satisfied and got angry again and again. "There are many tasks now. I am very tired. I am troubled. I don't want to live anymore in this house. I just want to live under the tree as we lived in the past" said the wife. The wife continued, "You will fishing and we will just cook the fish." So, the man went again to the golden fish and said that "Because my wife is lazy, she doesn't want to live anymore in the house even though the house is very beautiful and magnificent. That's why my wife said she just wants to live under the tree and cook the fishes." The golden fish said OK and told the man to return home. When he got home, his wife was happily living under the tree that they lived before. Because they both lived happily in such situations since they were young, they just felt happy in such places. Therefore, the couple just lived happily under the trees and cooked the fish for the rest of their lives.

Thus, there is a Jinghpaw proverb that 'There is no boring thing but only exist is a habit." Therefore, they just lived happily under the tree because they felt happy when they lived under the tree in the past.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
