Title Num wa kasha hpe sha ai lam (The woman who ate her child) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
In the past, Kachin were animists. One day, a woman gave birth to a baby. It was just a few weeks after she gave birth. A wildcat came to the chicken coop and ate some chicks. The husband told her, "I will go and check what has happened there." She stopped him, "No, don't go there, please. I am scared." He comforted her, "It's okay. I will not take a long time." But that wildcat was possessed by an evil nat. As he chased the wildcat, it ran away. Unluckily, the evil nat possessed his wife. Then, she bit her baby and ate him while sitting at the front door. When the husband saw his wife sitting at the door and eating the baby, he went crazy and became a fool. This is the end of the story.

Moi shawng e da num wa i kasha hpe gawa sha ai da. Nat jaw prat rai na hku nga dai she num dai gaw ma shangai da ai da. Ma shangai rai she shata mi pyi ndu shi ai i bat arang hku sha naw re da. Dai she le u lawng de gaw da hkan wa mi she i hkan she u sa magra sha ai le. Sa magra sha ai she madu wa tsun ai "E ngai wora de naw sa yu na yaw" ngu tsun ai da madu jan gaw "Hkum sa law ngai hkrit ai" ngu tsun ai da. "Nra law jahkring sha re" ngu na she shi gaw sa yu ai da. Dai de na hkan hpe sa shachyut ai wa hkan dai wa gaw i nkaja ai le ndai ndang sa wa kap na hku nga. Dai she dai sa shachyut nga yang she ndai sa shachyut nga yang she wo ra num jan gaw i ma shangai da re nga yang sai naw hkalung ai re nga yang shi gaw nat kap wa ai le i. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
