Title Grai lagu ai ma (The thief child) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story is about a thief. Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son in a village. When he went to the school, his mother told him, "Bring some eggs from others, son." Since his mother told him to bring some eggs, he stole eggs from the others and went back home. His mother didn't scold him for doing that. She even praised him, "Good job, my son." The next day, he brought needles home. Then, his mother told him, "That's great, my son. I need those." He grew that bad habit. Wherever he went, he stole something from other people. But his mother didn't scold or blame him. Later, he even stole cows or buffaloes. Then, the village chiefs arrested him. They called his mother to come and look at her son. She asked her son, "Why are you here and being arrested, my son?" He said, "It's all because you didn't teach me what is right or wrong." The villagers were going to execute him because he stole many things. Then, he called his mother, "Mom, come near me. I would like to tell you something." When his mother sat closer to him and bent her body forward to listen to him, he suddenly cut her ears off with his teeth. So, a mother should teach her children properly.

Kasha gaw udi ni la wa i dai hku kanu udi ni htet jang gaw udi ni masha ni na shingjat hkan na udi ni lagu wa ya rai jang she hpa tim udi ni lagu wa tim kanu gaw "Yi grai byin ai nye kasha" ngu na she woi shadu sha da. Dai she hpang e gaw samyit ni i samyit ni hta wa jang she "Yi rai sai ara lo nye kasha nu pyi samyit nlu nga hte kaja sai grai hkrak hkra samyit mung la wa ya nga" nga na shi gaw samyit ni la hpang e gaw i masha ni na dai hku amyu myu ni lagu ai le hpa hkrup hpa lagu wa jawng de sa tim lagu hkrai lagu wa tim shi gaw kasha hpe hpa nnga ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
