Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
This is about a widow and a son who were farmers. A long time ago, there was a poor, old widow in a village. She didn't have any children, but she really loved to have children. So, she asked her sister to give her her son. And she raised him well. She adored him so much. Since she couldn't afford to send her son to school, she taught him how to plow and do farming. She taught him how to do farming and plowing. Since they were poor, the boy couldn't learn anything at school. Before her husband died, they had a farm. After her husband died, she let her adopted son farm there. The boy felt tired of working on the farm. He had no choice but to work on the farm for their living. He went to the farm every day to work. So, his widowed mother packed a delicious meal for him when he went there. The other boys slandered him, "Your mother is not your birth mother. That's why she doesn't prepare any delicious food for you. She doesn't care for you." He was upset to hear that. When his widowed mother came to him to give the meal, he blamed his mother. The old mother loved him as her birth son even though she didn't give birth to him. When her son blamed her, she forgave him. She thought to herself, "He doesn't understand my love for him yet. I need to care for him more." The next morning, the boy blamed his mother again when she came to the farm to give the meal. But the old mother forgave him again. She was really upset, and her eyes were filled with tears. Then, she came back home. She thought, "My son is angry at me because I don't prepare a delicious meal for him." So, she went crabbing. She went to the lake and caught some crabs and prawns. Then, she cooked those for her son. Then, she went to the farm to give food to her son. But he was angry at her. She was sad. That night, she thought, "When I go to my son tomorrow, I will just run away if he is still angry at him and blames me." She couldn't sleep well since the unhappy thoughts killed her. The next day before his mother came to the farm, he went back to his house. On his way, he saw a mother goat and a baby goat. They were walking separately. At that time, the baby goat was bleating. When the mother goat heard her baby bleating, she quickly ran to her baby. Then, it prodded its mother to feed it. So, the mother goat fed it. At that moment, the boy reflected with sadness, "I always blamed my mother for not cooking a delicious meal. Even animals know how to treat their mothers. I am ungrateful and angry at my mom when she comes to feed me. I am wrong. I will not be angry at my mom when she comes to me this morning. I will apologize to her." So, he returned to the farm without going back home. He was waiting for his mother. On the other hand, the old mother was afraid of her son if he would be angry with her again. So, she went there a bit late. When the boy saw his mom, he felt apologetic and didn't know what to do. He decided to apologize to his mother, so he climbed onto the embankment to talk to her. But his mother thought, "My son is going to scold and blame me again. Then, he will be sinned. I won't let this happen." Then, she ran away. Unfortunately, she fell from the bridge at the gate of the village and died. Then, this kind of accident happened. The boy witnessed everything. His intention was to apologize to his mother, but his mother misunderstood him. He was late to apologize to her. He was sorrowful and had to live the rest of his life with regret.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
