Once upon a time in a place, there was a man, a treasurer, who was managing the treasury of a king. And, he has a child. Oh no, he hadn't had yet the child. His wife was very active and smart. But, he was not very active and a little bit unintelligent. So, his wife used to work out. Since the man was a little bit unintelligent, the wife thought that when they have a child one day, she wanted her child to be energetic and smart, not to be like her husband. So, she prayed for that. As it was a long time ago when people were with Nat worshipping religion, the woman was praying to her Nat. At that time, Nat said that 'since you are praying to me for a child, you can choose only one to have a child, so you can't choose two or three.' The Nat continued that 'since you also want a boy, you can only choose one thing that you will get the benefit from your child.' The woman was quite difficult to choose but she replied that 'if I can choose only one thing, I want my child not to be unintelligent like his father and I want my child to be very smart. So, I want to have a boy who is really intelligent and able to decide whatever smartly with his own brain.' So, Nat said that 'OK, as you pray, you will get a boy and he will be very smart and very intelligent but he will be very ugly.' But, the woman accepted what Nat said and returned to her home. This was about the wife of the treasurer. There was a woman, who is the wife of a judge of the palace and she had also no child. So, she also went to the Nat and prayed for a child. The Nat also asked the woman to choose only one thing like he asked the wife of the treasurer. What the woman said was that 'I want a girl who is the most beautiful in this palace and everybody will say she is very beautiful.' So, Nat said that 'OK, since you want a very beautiful girl, you will get a daughter who is really the most beautiful girl but she will be very unintelligent.' When Nat asked the woman which one to choose between beauty and unintelligence, the woman chose beauty as she wanted that. Later, since they were living in the same palace, the boy and the girl were playing together and every time they bragged at each other. The ugly boy said that 'when I get to marry, I will just marry a girl who is really smart and intelligent like me.' The girl also said that 'I will also marry only to a handsome boy.' They bragged at each other like that. Gradually, when they grew up, it was true that the girl was very very beautiful but she knew nothing and very unintelligent. Whatever taught her, she learned nothing, very unintelligent, and forgot again and again. On the other hand, the boy was very smart and intelligent more and more. Because the boy was very smart, he thought that the girl was very unintelligent but since she was very beautiful, perhaps he might be able to teach her. So, as he thought it would be good to marry her, he said to her about he loves her. But, the girl said that 'I don't like you such an ugly boy. And, my father and mother might also not agree to marry you.' The boy replied that 'even though I am ugly and not handsome physically, my heart is very beautiful'. But, the girl just kept saying that 'it is impossible to mary me'. The boy replied again that 'no, I can make you to be like me one day'. Then, the girl said that 'So, if you can make me to be like you within three years, I will marry you'. In fact, during the next three years, the boy taught the girl a lot but the girl didn't learn anything because she was very unintelligent. But, the boy was very patient although he was ugly. The boy kept teaching not only literature but also other things such as cultural knowledge, how to wear traditional dresses and communication skills about how to communicate with each other as they were living in the palace so they needed to know such knowledge and skills. The girl was really unintelligent in the begining, but the boy was patient and keep teaching her again and again, like 10 times, 20 times. Again and again everyday. The girl was getting recognized what she was taught. The girl was also careful to remember the knowledge and skills that she learned. Gradually, the girl learned well the kills that the boy taught her such as how to dress and how to communicate including introducing each other. On the day that the girl learned well such the knowledge and skills, the boy said that 'I am going to marry you.' As it was also the promise of the girl to marry him after three years, she told her parents about the boy wants to marry her. when the parents of the girl saw the boy, because the boy was very ugly, they bitterly refused the boy to marry their daughter and asked him to return home. Then, the girl also said that 'so, my parents do not agree to marry you. Actually, as I told you since I was young, I also didn't love you. These days, I just changed my mind because you were teaching me a lot.' Then, they separated. But soon later, the girl was remembering the heart of the boy because the boy was very decent and also very patient in teaching her. She said to herself that 'if I marry such a man, the rest of my life will be full of happiness.' Then, she just kept remembering the boy everyday. Because of such her feeling, one day, she requested her parents for permission to marry him. The parents also learned later that the boy was with pure heart and also very intelligent. Then, they also permited their daughter to marry the boy because they thought that a man with a pure heart is better than an ugly man. Therefore, in our Jinghpaw race, it is said that 'although there is no substitution in appearance, there is regret'. And, it is important to have a pure heart despite being ugly.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
