I am telling a story about an elephant and a human. A long time ago, humans and animals could talk and communicate with each other. At that time, the elephant asked the human. "How many years are you pregnant?" The human answered, "It is about ten months." The female elephant did not hear well, so it thought ten months was ten years. Then it asked again, "Is it ten years of pregnancy?" The human denied it and said, "No, Elephant, it lasts ten months for a pregnancy." The elephant did not hear clearly and said, "Aww, it is ten years?" The human replied, "Not ten years. Only ten months pregnant." The elephant asked the third time, "Have you been pregnant for ten years and ten months?" Although the human answered for only ten months, the elephant heard it for ten years and asked the human again. The human kept saying, "No, we have only been pregnant for ten months." The elephant did not hear well and said, "Aww, for ten years?" The human denied, "No, it is not. Ten months only." The elephant heard it as if it was ten years instead of ten months. The elephant repeated the question, "How many years are you?" The human answered, "Ten months only." But the elephant heard, "Ten years?" The human replied, "Not ten years. Only ten months." However, the elephant did not hear and said. "Aww, ten years?" At last, the elephant asked again for the tenth time. "Human, you are pregnant for ten months and ten years?" The human said, "No, only for ten months." Nevertheless, the elephant said, "Is it ten years?" The human could not be patient and said, "Yes. Ten years. Let's be pregnant for ten years." The human told the elephant to be pregnant for ten years as it did not hear well. Therefore, the elephants did not like humans and could not stand the sight of humans. "Aww, you humans get pregnant for only ten months, but let elephants be pregnant for ten years." The elephants were angry at humans in ancient times. Due to their anger, the elephants could not stand the sight of women, especially pregnant ladies. Some of the female elephants could tame them when people put women's clothes on them, Due to the ancient story, we could know that elephants did not like humans. The elephants chased the women, especially the pregnant ones. They hated a lot, chased them, then beat them. The elephants chose the smell of the women, although they were in the jungle. However, they did not attack men. The female elephants did not like the female humans a lot; according to the story, they chased them wherever they saw women. If the women were pregnant, they stepped on them, After that, they took out a baby from the mother's womb and killed the baby. That was how much elephants hated the human ladies. Therefore, when they saw the female humans, they could not even smell the scent of women; they did not pester if the men's clothes were hanging. They disturbed heavily if the women's clothes were hanging.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
