Description Translation (Htoi Awng)
I am going to tell about the genesis of the humankind in short. It is about the genesis of humankind before we know God. It is about how humankind had become. Humankind appeared and lived in Gin Lunghkrung. Humans descended from N-gawn Chyalung and N-gam Woi Shun. We are the creations of them, and they made the shape of the human by the soil. Then, humans had been created. At first, they begot N-gawn Wa Magam. They raised him. And they raised a sibling; Janga and Janyi. N-gawn Wa Ma Gam asked Janyi Janga to tie the knot with him. When he asked like that, the relatives of Janga said, "You two can't get married because you are related as brothers and sisters. So, it shouldn't be." They denied N-gawn Wa Ma Gam and he was very sad. While he was sadly walking alone, he saw a beautiful girl and followed her. The name of the girl was Jakai. He told her that he loved her. They lived together happily. Then, many people derived from them. And we are descendants of them. Jinghpaw, Maru, Lashi, Lisu, Hkanung, Rawang and Azi are descents of them, and we all are only one. We had stayed together at Majoi Shingra Mt. And we all spread down. We had started farming since then. Our ancestors used to tell that traditional marriage and Manau dance has been spreading since then. The Manau patterns of Kachin inspired by the birds. Birds such as a long-tailed shrike and a racket tailed drongo led the dance. And then many kinds of birds such as great hornbill and hornbill followed the dance. People saw that and danced like birds. Manau dance is the inspiration of the birds' dance. The ancestors used to tell that Kachin were inspired by the birds and started dancing Manau dance from that day. If we review that history, my parents often told me the stories when I was young. In this age, we are worshipping GOD. And we celebrate Manau festival in more religious way. The patterns on Manau poles are not created by human. Long time ago in the jungle, a ravine and a night bird called 'Hkam Hkam u' were drawing patterns on each other. A raven drew the beautiful patterns on Hkam Hkam U (a night bird). And the hunters saw that. The hunters saw those beautiful patterns. A ravine drew very beautiful patterns on Hkam Hkam U. But it did not want to draw for a ravine. It got bored, and pushed the ravine into an indigo pool. Our elders said that a ravine was black since then. This is when our elders started dancing Manau dance. We learnt by looking at the movement of the sun. And then, we learnt from everyone and drew the patterns on Manau poles. Our ancestors told that Kachin ethnic has derived from like this. I will just tell about this in short. Kachin people got inspired by the birds to dance Manau dance. And while one of Kachin men was farming, he danced like a bird when he heard a sound of a woodpecker. He had seen the dance of bird. Since then, we started dancing Manau dance. I am just telling you about this in short.

N-gawn chyalung ngu ai hte ngam woi shun ngu ai yan kaw na anhte shinggyim masha ni lat wa ai re. Anhte shinggyim masha ni shan kaw na shan lahkawng gaw ndai shinggyim hkrang hpe ga hpe galaw da ma ai da, shan ga hpe galaw da re na dai kaw na anhte shinggyim masha ni paw pru wa ai, N-gawn wa magam ngu ai shan dai hpe shalat dat sai, sha prat dat sai. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
