Title Hkawhkawm shayi sha la lata ai lam (The Choosy Princess and the Masked Prince) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Now, I'm going to tell you about a princess who was selecting her consort. Once upon a time, there was a princess who lived in a great palace. She had been served by many servants and lived happily. She became a grown woman day after day. One day, her father told her to get married. However, she didn't want to get married. So her father thought of an idea and announced something to all the civilians. And he told her, "Tomorrow is the day for your consort selection. You have to choose one man, so choose him carefully." The princess was upset hearing it and slept that night. The next morning, every man from different places came to the consort selection event. Everyone was queuing there. The king said, "Now, the princess will come and choose her consort." The princess soon came out and tried to choose her consort. She commented, "This man looks like a bamboo slat." She implied that because he was so slim. She didn't want to get married to him, so she said, "He looks like a bamboo slat. I don't want him." Then, she looked at another man and commented, "This man looks like a pig." She gave bad comments to every man. The king was just looking at his daughter and waiting to see who she was going to choose. The princess said, "I can't get married to him. He is so ugly!" The king was really mad at her at night. He angrily told her, "What kind of daughter are you!? You embarrassed me in front of many people! I will just let you get married to any man or beggar who comes to the palace gate! Even if it is a dog, I will just let you marry it!" After that, he went to bed. That night, a prince came to eavesdrop on what they were talking about. When the king and princess woke up the next morning, the king looked outside the palace. There was a man, who had a bandage on his arms and a crippled leg, begging for food in front of the palace gate. He had been begging for food since early this morning. Then the king thought, "I will just let my daughter marry him." The king told the princess, "You have to marry that man. You deserve it. You didn't choose a good man when you had a chance. Now, you will have to marry any man. He is for you!" The beggar took the princess to his old shanty house. He helped her cook the meals for them, but she was just sitting there without doing anything because she didn't know how to cook. Since he had leprosy, he cooked for her using his broken hands. The meals were not as well prepared as in the palace. The kitchen was not clean enough either. She hated to eat meals. Although she didn't want to live with him, she had to because of her father. She couldn't trust her husband because he was naive. He let her sell different types of clay pots, from small to big. She had to sell clay pots, such as vases. She was worried that people might notice her as a princess. Therefore, she wrapped her head in a turban. Her husband, who dressed as a prince, rode a horse towards her pots and plates. He broke almost all the pots and plates. She was worried that her husband was going to get angry. She shouted, "Why did you break all of my pots and plates? I am very poor. I am earning some money just by selling these pots and plates to look after my husband, who has leprosy. Why did you do that?" She bent her body and said that to him because she was embarrassed. The man with a horse said, "Look at me." Then she moved her turban and looked at him closely. It turned out he was her husband. She was happy at that time and asked him, "Why do you have a horse? Why are you like a normal person?" He said, "You were giving bad comments to every man in your consort selection event. I wanted to know what kind of man you were going to get married to. That night, I eveasdropped on your father saying he would let any man marry you, even though that man was a beggar. So I pretended to be a beggar and stood in front of your palace. It's all because I want to get married to you." He was a prince. He told everything to his parents and parents-in-law. He took her to his country and lived happily and peacefully ever after.
