Title Da da sha ai shayi sha a lam (The Weaver) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story is about a weaver. Once upon a time, there was a married couple. They had a child. They had a daughter. Later, the mother died of illness. Then her father married another woman. The stepmother had a daughter, too. She had a daughter, too. Then the girl had a stepsister too. Her stepmother was really mean. She ordered her husband's daughter to weave the whole day without taking a rest. Her daughter didn't have to do any household chores; she just prepared herself and went outside every day. The stepmother ordered her husband's daughter to do a lot of work and chores. She scared the girl and scolded her, "If you can't finish weaving one cloth, you won't get anything to eat!" But she let her own daughter hang out with friends. The girl had to weave the whole day then. There was a well next to the place where she was weaving. The stepmother didn't want her to live with them. She wanted to drive her away. Therefore, the stepmother threw the loom into the well. And she told the girl to weave. She told her, "If you don't finish weaving this today, you won't get to eat. Don't live in this house too!" The girl was worried because her loom had disappeared. The loom was made of bamboo and wood. When it was dried, it floated on the water. The loom floated and was visible, although it was thrown into the well. She kept looking for the loom. Then she looked inside the well to check if there was the loom. She saw the loom in the well. She was thinking about how to take the loom out of the well. The well was too deep. While the girl was bending and looking into the well, the stepmother pushed her into it. The girl fell into it. She was so scared and unconscious. She fell into the well. When she was conscious, she was on the grass. When she was conscious, she was on the grass. She was thinking, "Where am I?" She couldn't remember what had happened. Soon, she remembered, "I was pushed into the well. Now, I am here." She stood up with all her strength and walked somewhere towards her. She saw a big house in front of her. She entered that house. There was an old man sitting inside the house. She asked him, "Grandpa, where is this place?" He said, "This is the place that makes the earth beautiful." The girl told him about her. She said, "I have a stepmother. She pushed me into the well, so I am here." The old man said, "It's alright. You can stay here. When you wake up early in the morning, shake the pillow I use when I sleep." She said, "Okay, I will do it." And she cooked for him and did all the chores. In the morning, she shook the pillow as the man said. By shaking the pillow, the snow fell onto the earth. The old man said to her, "By shaking the pillow, there is snow in the earth." The girl lived there for almost three years. The old man had the power to do anything. He was really powerful. After three years, she told him, "Grandpa, I really want to see my father. Can I go back home?" He told her, "Of course. You can go back home. You are doing very well here." The girl was originally pretty. However, the old man clapped three times and made her even more beautiful than before. He gave her pretty dresses too. He clapped again, and then there was gold. He gave the gold to her too. He told her, "Take all of these things when you go back home. But don't look inside it. Don't look inside it. You can look at it when you arrive home." He gave those things to her and said, "Close your eyes now. You will be right in front of your house." He told her to close her eyes. She closed her eyes and stood up. At that time, the man clapped and said, "You can open your eyes now." When she opened her eyes, she was really in front of her house. She was happy and walked into the house. Then, her stepmother was really shocked. The stepmother thought that the girl was already dead. The stepmother pretended to be very happy and asked her, "My daughter, where have you been?" The girl was pure, so she said, "My stepmother, you pushed me into the well. I met the old man when I woke up. The old man helped me a lot. When I asked him to give me valuable things, he gave them to me and let me go home." The stepmother also wanted her own daughter to be like her stepdaughter. She really wanted her daughter to be beautiful like her stepdaughter. She didn't let her stepdaughter do any household chores, and she let her own daughter do all the chores alone. She ordered her own daughter to weave the clothes. And she threw the loom into the well. After that, she told her daughter to find it. And then she pushed her own daughter into the well, as she had done to her stepdaughter before. Her own daughter was also unconsciously lying down on the grass. When she regained consciousness, she also arrived at the old man's house. She had been really lazy since she was on the earth. The old man told her, "When you wake up, shake this pillow." But she didn't shake it properly. Then there was no snow on the earth. As a result, everything became unpleasant. The old man got angry at her. He thought, "This girl never shakes the pillow properly. She is not hardworking." Then she had been there for three years already. However, the old man didn't give her any comments, no matter how well or poorly she did. After three years, she told him, "Grandpa, I want to go home." He said, "Of course. You can go back home." He told her to stand straight and clapped his hands. And he said, "Close your eyes. Don't open your eyes." While she was closing her eyes, the old man clapped his hands. When he clapped his hands, (it was like they were on their own planet.) oil dregs poured onto her body. Then she became darker than she was before. But she didn't feel anything. She became darker than before. He gave her a pack of gold, too. He told her, "Open it when you arrive home. All of you can look at it together at that time." The girl also held it tight while closing her eyes. The old man said, "When I clap my hands this time, you will be in front of your house. When I say you are there, you can open your eyes at that time." He told her to close her eyes. When the man clapped his hands, she was really right in front of her house. He said, "Now, you can go into the house." Then she opened her eyes and walked into her house. But her birth mother couldn't recognize her at all. The mother thought, "Where is that dark woman from?" The daughter said, "Mom, it's me. It's me." Then the mother took a good look at her and could remember her. She was really surprised to see her daughter with that look. However, she still thought the pack her daughter was holding was gold. Then they didn't call the father and the innocent girl, and opened the pack by themselves. There was a big snake inside it. The snake bit both of them to death. In the end, the father and his own daughter lived happily in that house.
