Description Translation (Seng Pan)
The story is about the frogs in a huge lake. Once upon a time, there was a huge lake in a deep forest. There lived many different species of frog. They were frogs, shu gawk (it's a kind of Asian black-spined toad) and shu gawng (it's a kind of toad with a big mouth, and it's eatable. The size is a bit bigger than shu gawk). "We, countless frogs, live here in this lake. Therefore, we need a leader," the frogs said. One day, the frogs in the lake held a meeting to choose their leader. "No one from our group can't take this position," shu gawk group said. Shu gawng, eatable toads, said, "We shouldn't be the leader. Because some of us always disappear in the mating period." Near the lake, there were the egrets that ambushed and flushed out the small frogs. "The egrets always come to our lake in the flock. And they are gorgeous. Let's elect the prettiest one among them and install as our leader," the frogs discussed. All of them agreed on that fact. They elected an egret. The flock of egrets didn't arrive early, and they only came late in the morning. When the egrets got there, they picked up the dead frogs and ate them. As some frogs saw it, they differed with other frogs over what they had agreed on before. "Our leader, the egret, eats our species. It has long legs and flies back to a far place. Therefore, the egret shouldn't be our leader anymore. Let's find another leader," the frogs said. So, they gathered again. All the frogs hold a discussion to choose another leader a day, but they couldn't select anyone. The next day, they met up again. Some said, "Let the egret be our leader. The egrets can eat all the insects around the lake. They are the best for us." However, some said, "No, we don't agree on that." On the third day, "Let's not ask for a leader for our lake! It would appear itself. So, when it is raining, let's make a loud noise with our own voice. The one who comes into the lake at that time would be our leader," the frogs said. One day, it rained heavily. The rainwater from the nearby villages flowed into the lake, and the water level in it increased. All the frogs stayed on the shore of the lake and made a loud noise. At that time, a deadfall tree drifted down with the rainwater into the lake. The frogs were so happy that they had found their leader. All of a sudden, they thought they had got a leader and assumed it was a nice one. Soon, they noticed that the dead tree didn't make even a move and the frogs which went into it couldn't escape and died inside it. Therefore, the rest frogs requested the egret to rule the lake again. "Egret, please come back to us and lead us!" the frogs said. Since the egrets got angry at the frogs, they didn't go to the lake anymore. "It was a mistake that we elected the dead tree as our leader," the frogs said. They were so sorry and regretted what they did.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
