Description	Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is a Kachin story. Are you ready? The story is about bamboo splits for tying. We have a culture called 'Ga tsun ga la'. It means asking for help. We have been using that culture since today. In the past, the Kachin people could build a bamboo house in a day. No matter how big the house was, they could build it in a day. The Kachin people from highland areas could build it. When a house was about to be built, the house owner asked the villagers for help. He said, "We are going to build a house today. Come and help us please." He asked every villager for help. We didn't have any machines or cranes. We didn't have those kinds of vehicles. We pulled the poles with ropes. We carried wood and bamboo without using any vehicles. We celebrated many events. Work was done easily in a village with just ten families. Work was done in a short time. The villagers helped each other and lived happily together in that village. When one had to clean his field, he could ask the villagers for help. Then they all worked together. In that village, there was a man who split some bamboo or cut one or two pieces of wood when someone called him for help to do something. One day, rainwater leaked into one man's house. When it was raining, there was rainwater leakage into his house. When it was sunny, it was really hot to stay in his house too. Then, he decided to repair his house. His house was just a small one. He called every villager for help to build his house. But everyone just split bamboo like him. Every villager just split bamboo. There was no one who carried the wood or covered the roof. The villagers were splitting bamboo and talking to each other. Therefore, there was a saying like 'let's split bamboo' in Kachin society. We lived in Dap Kawng (Tat Kone Quarter) in the past. We could build a small house just in one day. If the house was big, we could finish building it in two days. Now, no one comes to help when we ask for help. Even if they come, we need to pay wages. I would like to say that there is a saying 'let's split bamboo' in Kachin society through this story. Transcription (La Ring) E Jinghpaw maumwi re. E ya rai sai i jin sai i? Collection title	Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description	Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
