Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
We should learn till we die. The story is called 'A pestle that grows bamboo'. Once upon a time, there was a man in a village. He didn't have any skills. He didn't even know how to make baskets. He didn't have any skills. One day, he went to the good nat and said," "I want to learn education. I want to learn some skills. I want to learn how to weave and make baskets." The nat told him, "It's not time for you to learn education. You will be skillful when bamboo grows on the pestle. You will be skillful at that time." He thought, "How come the bamboo grows on the pestle? No way." However, he kept looking for it. He then reached a village and met the old man. He told the old man, "I was told that I would be skillful when the bamboo grew on the pestle." The old man told him, "Don't look for it. There is no pestle that can grow roots on this earth. The bamboo won't grow on it. Learn a new skill since today." He wanted to learn how to make things with bamboo. Then the old man taught him how to do it. He taught him how to make baskets and trays. He learnt a lot about handicrafts. He grew older as time passed. Later, the old man told him, "Go to that educated man and learn how to write and read from him." Then, he went to that man and learnt it instead of looking for the pestle. After some time, he could write and read very well. He learnt the meaning of the words. After some years, he could make baskets and trays very well. He could write and read very well too. He got those skills and could work well with other people. Then, he could buy a buffalo. On that day, he said, "Although the bamboo can't grow on the pestle, and the pestle can't grow roots, I have a skill now. It is the same as the pestle could grow roots finally." Then, he went to the nat. The nat asked him, "Have you learnt a new skill?" He said, "Today, the bamboo has finally grown on the pestle. I have learnt a skill." And he told him everything he learnt. When we learn something, there is no age limit. No matter how old we are, we can learn something new every day. Some say, "We should learn till the day we are dead." This story highlights that we shouldn't be depressed by the thought that we are unskilled. We can be skillful if we learn. Our elders usually tell us this story.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
