Title Hkrai Naw hte Hkrai Gam (Snake groom and Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam) with English translation
Description Translation (Gun Mai)
The story that I am telling now is about the two brothers called Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam. Long long ago in a big village, there was a widow who had two daughters. They were only three persons including mother and they were in a hardship life. They had to go to the forest to find food. One day, when the woman, the mother of two daughters, went to the forest with the ordinary basket that usually carried by women to find food, there was a tree called Shayu tree that usually grows in the forest on the way of the woman to the forest. She found a shayu fruit on the ground and picked the fruit. It was sweet and sour so very good taste so she said to herself that "If there is anyone who can pick the fruit for me, I have two daughters and I will give to marry one of the daughters to the person who can pick the fruit for me." When she said so, there was a big snake on the tree that was picking and eating the Shayu fruits. The snake heard what the woman said so he said to the woman that "Hey woman, if you really give me to marry one of your daughters, I will pick the Shayu fruits for you." When the woman looked at the tree, she saw a big snake but when she looked at the tree again, she saw a human who was transformed from the snake. The woman said that "Yes, pick the fruits for me. I will give a daughter. I don't have a son. I only have two daughters and we all are three persons. We are very poor and in hardship life. I am coming here to find food in the forest." The snake said that "Yes, OK." The snake that was on the tree transformed into a human and shook the tree so a lot of fruits were dropped. So, the woman took the fruits and put them in her basket. When she got many fruits, she returned home. When he got home, she said to the elder daughter that "Elder daughter, I got a lot of fruits. Listen to me. Let's eat the fruits I brought." But, the elder daughter said to her mother that "No, I don't eat the fruits you brought. I won't also listen to what you said." So, the mother said to her younger daughter that "My younger daughter, I did not get other things and brought only the fruits. Let's eat these fruits, my dear daughter." "Yes, mother. I will listen to what you said, mother," and they ate the fruits. The mother and the younger daughter ate the fruits and the mother said to her younger daughter that "My dear daughter, when I was going to the forest, these fruits were picked by a snake. Because he picked the fruit for me, I told him that I will give to marry one of my daughters." Then, the younger daughter said that "Yes, mother. I will listen to what you said. I will marry him." The younger sister also eat the fruits and also promised her mother that she would marry the snake. And so, the snake transformed into a man at night and also wore a hat and dress smartly. The man carried a bag called Htawng Hkun bag and also a silver sword and came to them. When the man got there, the elder daughter said that "Mother, because you said to marry snake before, I denied what you said. But, now he is a handsome man." But, the mother said that "You are late now. I have to give him the younger daughter to marry." When the woman gave her younger daughter, the man said that "We have a lot of things to pay for the bride including gold. We are very rich. Now, I am going to take the younger sister," and the man took the younger sister with him. There was a huge lake that was joined by nine streams. When the man got there, the man transformed into a snake and said that "Hold my back and close your eyes," and the snake quickly brought the girl to the place where his parents were living. They smoothly got to the gold cave and rich cave. When the snake and the girl got there, the snakes said that "Oh...you captured and brought the girl to eat. OK, let's eat now." But, the snake man said that "She is not to eat. She is my wife who I love." So, the snakes also did not do anymore and they lived lovingly there. The girl also lived happily with the snakes. She also wove and worked and got a lot of money. May be the snakes were very rich. After they lived a while, the girl said to her husband snake that "Let's go now to the land of Mayu (the place where the parents of the wife live). "I think I don't need to come with you anymore. You can go. I will send you. When you return, stand nearby this big lake and call me. I will come and pick you up," the husband snake said. And, the snake man also gave a lot of gold, money, and properties that were available in the place of the snakes as paying prices for the bride. The snake man gave many things including a thing called gold shingwai and the girl went to her parents' home. When the younger sister got to her mother's home, because she was the wife of the snake, she wore gold rings, gold necklaces and she was very shined and beautiful so her elder sister got jealous of the younger sister. The elder sister said to the younger sister that "Younger sister, let's do this today." The younger sister said that "No, I don't need to do anything. Only my servants used to work. I don't need to do that. Now, I am coming here to support my mother. I miss my mother a lot." But, one day, the elder sister said again the younger sister that "My younger sister, when we meet now, let's go fishing and let's cook fish to eat with mother happily." The younger sister then said that "Yes, OK." So, the younger sister went fishing as her elder sister called. When they went fishing, the elder sister caught a fish called Ngawan La and stuck it on the gold shingwai of the younger sister. The younger did not know what the elder sister did to her. Soon later, the younger sister returned home where the snakes were living. When she got to the huge lake, as she was told to do, she called her husband. But, when her husband came to her, the husband said that "I am afraid of you." The wife said that "Why are you afraid of me?" The husband said that "Look at your gold shingwai." When the wife looked at the gold shingwai, she saw a fish and said that "Nothing on the gold shingwai except this fish." The husband then said that "That is our louse. We are very afraid of it." And, the husband snake did not bring her anymore to their home, and the younger sister was abandoned. So, the younger sister returned to the place where her mother and elder sister were living. When the younger sister was living with her mother and elder sister, she got pregnant of the twin boys. When the time arrived, the younger sister gave birth to the twin boys. The twin boys were born but they didn't have a father. Since they had no father, according to our tradition, they were orphaned boys. One boy was named Hkrai Gam and one boy was named Hkrai Naw. So, the younger sister got two sons: Ma Gam (the first son) and Ma Naw (the second son). When the two boys were growing and became adults, they asked their mother that "Mother, where is our father?" The mother said that "You are not old enough to find your father. I will tell you when you twos get older." Then, when they got older, educated, and stronger, they asked again that "Mother, where is our father?" The mother said that "I will tell you later. You two are still not strong enough." When they were strong enough, the mother said that "Dear my two sons, Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam, if you two want to know your father, go to the big lake that was joined by the nine streams and pound iron posts with a hammer." So, they pounded the iron posts loudly, 'pound! pound! pound! pound!'. A shrimp came out from the lake and said to the two brothers that "Hey! Our chief feels dizzy. He said not to pound the hammer." The two brothers said that "Your chief feels dizzy?" and they hit the tail of the shrimp. Soon later, a fish came out from the lake and said that "Hey! Our chief feels dizzy. He said not to pound the hammer." The two brothers said that "Whatever your chief feels dizzy," and they hit the head of the fish. Other fishes and crabs were also hit by Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam on that day. Finally, their father came out from the lake and said that "Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam, why are you pounding the whole day? I said not to pound but you don't listen to what I said." The two brothers also got angry and tied their father with the iron string. When the snake tied up with the iron string struggled to get free, the lake was getting dry and all the mountains around were also shaking. But, Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam strongly tied up their father, snake so he was not able to get free. Thus, the snake said to his two sons that "Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam, it is not good that no one is winning. In order for you two to win me, tie up me with a tree called Hka Hkinri instead of the iron string. Tie up me with Hka Hkinri tree." So, when they tied up the snake with the Hka Hkinri tree, the snake could not move anymore and was calming down. When the snake calmed, the two brothers said that "Now, we are going to kill you." The snake then said that "Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam, please don't kill me," and he gave a bow called Lali bow and a sword called Bumtawng sword to Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam. Hkrai Gam took the Bumtawng sword and Hkrai Naw took the Lali bow. Then, the snake said that "Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam, let's wait until monsoon season." But, Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam said that "No need to wait until monsoon season. Let's do today," and they made a raft with the banana trees. And, when they went into the lake with the banana tree raft, the snake sat between the two brothers as the two brothers were sitting on each side of the raft. At that time, Hkrai Gam slashed with the Bumtawng sword so the snake was also cut and the raft was also split. Thus, Hkrai Gam floated upstream with the raft and Hkrai Naw floated downstream. When Hkrai Naw got to a village, no one lived there. When he was wandering, he met an old woman. So, he asked the old woman that "Grandmother, there is no one who lives here. Why?" The old woman said that "Grandson, there is a hawk that eats children and people. The hook will come again soon. People are afraid of it so they are hiding." Hkrai Naw then said that "If so, I will shoot the hawk." "Impossible," the old woman said. "It is OK. I will shoot it," Hkrai Naw said. The old woman quickly went to the king and said that "I have a guest. He said that he can shoot the hawk that eats people." The king said that "Bring him to me." When Hkrai Naw got to the king, the king asked Hkrai Naw that "Can you really shoot and kill the hawk?" "Yes, I can," Hkrai Naw answered. The king said that "If you can shoot the hawk, I will give half of the town of the palace. I also have two girls called Nang Chyang (Black) and Nang Hpraw (White). You can take either of them." Hkrai Naw said that "OK! When does the hawk usually come?" "It usually comes in the morning about over eleven o'clock," the king answered. Soon later, a big snake/hawk came out. Hkrai Naw asked, "Is that?" "No," the king answered. Another one came again. "Is that one?" Hkrai Naw asked and the king said, "No." Later, a very big one came out. Hkrai Naw asked that "Is that one?" The king said that "Yes, that one." So, Hkrai Naw shot the hawk with his bow. Because he could shoot the hawk, he got half of the town of the palace and he also took Nang Chyang. Then, Hkrai Naw continued his journey and when he got to the big town, there was no one lived. Hkrai Naw said that "No one is living there. Why is it?" A person said that "Who are you? There is a big snake that is very aggressive. (Previously was a hawk and now was a snake.) That's why we all are hiding." Hkrai Naw then said that "Don't be afraid of it. I will shoot the snake." The person said that "Impossible." "It is OK," Hkrai Naw said. "If you can shoot the snake, you can get half of the town and you can also take either Nang Chyang or Nang Hpraw - the one you like," Hkrai Naw was told and he took Nang Hpraw this time. He previously got Nang Chyang and now he got Nang Hpraw. Then, he went to his elder brother. When he was going upstream, the elder brother, Hkrai Gam married a monkey and he was splitting bamboo into strips with his Bumtawng sword on the top of a tree. When Hkrai Naw got there, the monkey was fetching water. Hkrai Naw asked the monkey that "How deep is this river?" The monkey answered that "Deep deep shallow shallow, deep deep shallow shallow." Hkrai Naw then got angry that "I think this monkey is a fool," and he shot the money to death with his bow. When Hkrai Naw continued his journey, he met with his elder brother, Hkrai Gam. Hkrai Gam asked Hkrai Naw that "Didn't you see your sister-in-law on the way?" Hkrai Naw said that "I did not see but I saw a monkey and when I asked how deep the river, the monkey was saying me that deep deep shallow shallow, deep deep shallow shallow. So, I got angry and shot with my bow to death." Hkrai Gam then said that "Ah... the monkey is your sister-in-law." Hkrai Naw said that "Elder brother, what to do with the monkey? Let's go now. I have Nang Chyang, Nang Hpraw, and also two halves of two towns." Nang Chyang and the half of the town Hkrai Naw got first gave to his elder brother and he lived in the second half of the town with Nang Hpraw. They were living there. The older the girl, Nang Chyang who was given to the elder brother was getting more black. Thus, the elder brother saw that Nang Chyang was not beautiful anymore, so he did not love anymore. So, the elder brother tried to kill his younger brother to take the wife of his younger brother, Nang Hpraw. There was a big empty hole and the elder brother covered the hole with the leaves and the leaves were moving because of the wind from the hole. The elder brother said to the younger brother that "Younger brother, it is a nest of wild boar. Wrestle the wild boar." "No, I will shoot with my bow," the younger brother said. "Don't shoot with the bow," the elder brother said. "If so, I will slash with your sword," the younger brother said again. "No, don't slash with my sword. Wrestle it," the elder brother said again. Thus, the younger brother thought to himself that "My elder brother does not allow me to shoot with my bow and also not allow to slash with his sword. I think he is trying to do something to me." But, the younger brother just decided to do as his elder brother said even though he knew it was something suspicious. So, the elder brother just jumped and wrestled on the leaves that were moving. Then, he dropped down through the empty hole and got to the place where charcoal was eaten. In that place, there were big fishes and the big fishes were dried and made the walls. In the place where the charcoal was eaten, the elder brother did not eat anything so he just took the wall that was made of big fish and ate it. So, the animals who were staying in that place said that "It is not good. Send this man to his place otherwise, our walls are going to run out." Thus, the animals who could dig the soil such as porcupines, mice were called to dig the soil. All the animals who could dig the soil were called to dig the soil and they dug the soil. The animals were digging slowly. So, the man said to the animals that "Dig quickly." Later, they already got to the place where only about one foot far from the ground. Then, the animals returned home and the man was sitting there. When he was sitting under the ground, the horse that he rode when he was a king got the man's smell and came to him, and stepped on the ground where the man was sitting and the ground was cracked and the foot of the horse went down through the ground. Then, the man grabbed the foot of the horse and when the horse fulled out the foot, the man could come out from the ground. So, the man was coming out from the place where the charcoal was eaten and he heard that there was a big party. So, he entered an old woman's house and asked that "Grandmother, what is doing other there?" "It is a competition event to draw the bow of Hkrai Naw who went down in the empty hole in the past. It said that those who can draw the bow will be awarded a big prize including half of the town but no one can draw the bow." Then, Hkrai Naw said that "But, I can do it. I can draw it." "Are you sure you can draw the bow?" the old woman asked. Hkrai Naw said that yes so the old woman went to the king and said that "There is a guest in my house. He said that he can draw the bow." The king asked to bring Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Naw drew the bow. Hkrai Naw drew the bow couple of times intentionally and then left it the bow. So, he was asked to eat food to refill the energy. After six times, he drew the bow well and put an arrow on the bow, and asked that "Where should I shoot?" "You can shoot wherever you want," the king said. The king who was the elder brother was sitting relaxedly on the rock at the top. Then, the younger brother said that "I will shoot at the base of the rock." And, he shot the rock and killed the king, his elder brother. So, the people said that "The guest killed the king. Arrest him and kill him." Thus, Hkrai Naw said that "I am not a guest. The king is my elder brother. He is my elder brother, Hkrai Gam and I am HKrai Naw. My elder brother lied to me and made me to go through the empty hole. And, he is ruling now. So, I shot him." So, the man said that "If so, your elder brother was guilty." Then, Hkrai Naw became the king and ruled the two countries. The story of Hkrai Naw and Hkrai Gam is ended here.
