This story is similar with the story about monkey that I have told. It is also relating with obeying the elders. And it is relating with helping and taking care of each other as well. This story is about those. Once upon a time, there was a family in a village. Then, the parents let their daughter spread the grains under the sun. They let her guard the grains. While she was guarding the grains, one crow came near her and asked for food. "Don't feed the grains to the birds. I will beat you if you feed. Guard carefully. We are going to cook that rice this evening," told her mother. The crow said, "Hello, little girl! I beg you. Give me some grains, please. I am starving. Just give me some." The girl said, "No, I can't give you. Mom will scold me. She told me that she would beat me if I fed the grains to the birds. Mom will beat me up. I can't give you although you are starving. When mom beats me up, I am the one who will be hurt." Then, the crow said, "But, just give me some. When your mom beats you, just go to the place where I show. I will give you a gift. But now, please let me eat some grains as I am starving." The girl felt pity for the crow and said, "Okay, eat, eat!" She let the crow eat the grains. While the crow was eating the grains, the girl was drowsy. Then, the crow ate lots of grains. When her mom came there, her mom said, "Seem like some birds ate the grains. How could she let the birds eat?" The little girl remembered what the crow said to her. It was "When your mom beats you up, come to the big tamarind tree which grows at the back of your village. There is our huge nest on that tree. We build our nest at the place where people couldn't see easily. Come there. We will give you some presents. Then, your mom will not beat you up." The crow left a message for her. So, the little girl told her mom about it. Her mom beat her since she let the birds eat the grains. Then, she said, "Mom, the crow begged me very much. So, I let it eat some because I felt pity for it. It said I could go there if mom beat me up. It said it would give me some presents." But the mother said, "You are lying." And she beat her again. But, the little girl went to the place where the crow nest was. When she arrived there, she saw that there were a big tamarind tree and crow nests on that tree. She said, "Hey, Mr crow! You asked food from me a while ago, and I let you eat some. But my mom beat me now. I am so hurt. What should I do now? How can I climb up there?" Then, the crow said, "Climb up. Which ladder would you like to use to climb up: gold ladder or wood ladder?" She replied, "No need to use the gold ladder. Just put the wooden ladder down. I'll use that. I might slip if I use the gold ladder." The crow let the wooden ladder down. The little girl also climbed by the ladder. Then, the crow asked her, "Here are two boxes! Which one do you want to take? The small one or the heavy, big one? Would you like to take the light, small box? Take one you like." The girl said, "How can I carry the heavy box? I can't! I will just take the light, small box." She took that box and went back to her house. Inside the small box, there were lots of gold. She told her mom, "I did exactly like what the crow said to me. The crow gave this to me." Then, the mother was so happy. They got the blessings from the crow. Then, one of their neighbours heard that news. And she also spread the grains under the sun. She was waiting for the crow then. The crow came there to ask for food like the previous time. She also gave some food to the crow. It said to this girl the same like what it told the first girl. Then, she went to that tree. When she arrived there, she was asked, "Which ladder would you like to use to climb up: the wooden ladder or the gold ladder?" She answered, "I will use the gold ladder to climb up." The crow said, "You might slip and fall down. Be careful!" Then, it put the gold ladder down. After she climbed up the tree, the crow asked her, "Which box do you want: the light, small one or the heavy, big one? Take one you want." She said, "I will take the big box." She carried the heavy, big box even though she couldn't carry well. She went back to her house and opened the box in front of her mother. When she opened it, she saw that there were only cobras in that box. She didn't get any gold.

Mam lam nna shinggan de, mam sin nga shangu ai. Mam sin nga shangun ai shaloi gaw, U-hka langai mi sa nna, dai num kasha kaw sa hpyi ai. “Ndai U hkum shayaw lu.. U shayaw yang nang hpe kayet na lu. Atsawm sha sin u. Daina ndai hpe htu nna shadu sha na re lu.” ngu nna Kanu gaw dai hku htet da yang she, U-hka wa gaw bai sa nna she, “E e jinghku kasha e, num sha e, nang kaw ngai grai hpyi nem ai law. Grai lajin ai law. Grai kawsi ai law. Ndai nang lam tawn ai mam, langai lahkawng sha pyi naw hta sha shangun rit le.. Loi sha gaw..jaw sha rit le.. “ngu. “N re na re. Nu daru ai. ‘Ya mam ndai U ni sha hkang jang kayet na.’ nga ai re majaw gaw, Nu daru na ra ai. Nu kayet na re, dai majaw n mai ai. Nang kade kawsi tim mung, nu kayet yang ngai grai machyi na re.” ngu ai “E rai tim mung kaji sha jaw rit law. Ya nang, Nnu e daru yang gaw e.. ngai matsun ai de sa u.. nang hpe ngai kumhpa jaw dat na re.” ngu ai. “Ngai grai kawsi ai dai majaw gaw loi sha gaw sha shangu rit.” ngu ai. Dai majaw dai ma gaw, matsan dum nna dai U-hka hpe “E sha u le.. deng gaw.” Ngu nna sha shangun ai. Sha shangun yang gaw, dai laman hta shi loi mi, ashe sam ai. Myi di yup mayu sam ai, re laman gaw, mam dai wa loi sha n sha sa. U-hka dai gaw, tsawm ra mi sha kau ya. Kwi !! kaja wa, e kanu du yang gaw “Ndai mam gaw, grai yet hkang nga ai le, ma ndai. Kaning re nna U shayaw kau ai re ta? “Ya nang hpe na nu e kayet jang gaw, Le nanhte a mare mai de tu ai hpun kaba Magyeng hpun kaw, anhte a tsip nga ai. Tsip kaba nga ai,nanhte galoi mung n mu i..Le..de. Nam de...mai de dai maga de... magyeng hpun kaba kaw anhte atsip nga ai nta nga ai re. Dai de sa wa rit. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
