Title U ni wan dap ahtu wa ai lam (Why chickens dig fireplace) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story is about a bird that always went to the fireplace first whenever it came into the house. When birds enter the house, they dig the fireplace first. Nowadays, we use electric ovens. In the past, we had to cook everything on fireplace. We put rice grains and other vegetables in the kitchen. But the bird always went to the fireplace first. I will tell you why the bird went to the fireplace first. In the past, we didn't use rice mill machines. We had to grind rice with a wooden mortar and pestle every morning. Then, birds were curious where people stored all those rice. So, the bird asked the dog, "You always sit in front of the ladder. You might know where people store their rice. Where is it?" The dog said, "I can't go inside, so I don't know where they store. I know what they do here. But I don't know what they do inside the house. The cat might know because it can live inside the house. Ask it." The bird asked the cat, "People grind rice every morning. And they take it inside the house. What did they do to those rice grains? Do you know?" The cat said, "They put the rice into the fireplace." People rinse the rice, put it into the pot and place it onto the fireplace. But the cat thought people put the rice into the fireplace. So, it said that they put the rice into the fireplace. The bird felt like it knew everything. So, whenever they came into the house, they went to the fireplace to find the rice. It was because they thought people hid the rice there.

Ya chyawm ndai myo ga hkan e gaw wan dap nrai mat ndai nhprap wan hte rai mat moi anhte bum ga de gaw wan dap kaw she ga re nga yang na wa jang dap rai mat ai. Dai kaw shadu ai rai nga. Dai majaw u ni shang yang ndai kaw n-gu buk nga ai nang kaw sha hpa nga ai re majaw dai kaw shawng kalang ta hkre dap de ahtu ai. Hpabaw majaw ndai dap ahtu ai ngu yang she moi gaw anhte mam rin jak nnga ai dan re nta ndaw kaw jahpawt shagu mam htu ai Jinghpaw ni gaw. Mam htu rai yang she u dai ni gaw mam "Shinggyim masha ndai ni mam htu nna gara de bai da kau ai" ngu chye mayu ai hku rai nga. Dai majaw "Ndai gaw chye ra sai" ngu di gwi hpe san ai da. "Nang gaw jahpawt shanang lakang pawt kaw hkring nga ai gaw dai shinggyim masha ni jahpawt shanang dai nang nga ai makau kaw htu ai mam dai gara de da kau ai ta" ngu san ai da. "E ngai gaw nta nhku de lung na ahkang ngai hpe njaw ma ai dai majaw ngai gaw nchyoi ai" ngai gaw ndai lakang npu na lam sha chyoi ai ngu hku rai nga. "Lakang npu kaw shinggyim masha ni hpa galaw ai chye ai nta nhku de shanhte hpa galaw ai gaw ngai nchye ai, dai gaw nyau she chye ai nta ntsa de nga lu ai gaw nyau she re nyau hpe san u" ngu. Dai majaw nyau hpe san ai da "Nyau e ndai jahpawt shanang ndai shinggyim masha ni mam htu nna dai bai gun lung wa, hpang jahpawt mung bai htu hpang bai gun lung wa, kaning di kau kau di ma ta jahpawt shanang htu ra ai gaw gara kaning di kau ai nang nchyoi i" ngu yang nyau gaw "Wan dap de bang kau ai rai ma ai" ngu hku rai nga. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
