Title Jahkyi (The barking deer) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I am going to tell is about a barking deer. I want to tell why a barking deer has got a white mark on its head. One day, when the barking deer ate gooseberries, it found that gooseberries were too bitter. So, it said, "Gooseberry fruits, you are so bitter. I will never eat you. You are just a tasteless fruit. If I eat these gooseberries again, I will get hit by the lightning." Then it went back. On its way, it saw that there was a stream near a ravine. It drank water from that stream since it was thirsty. When it drank water, it felt delicious taste in its mouth because it ate gooseberries. So, it went back there to eat gooseberries again. It couldn't keep its promise not to eat gooseberries. Then it got hit by the lightning since it ate gooseberries again. That's why, the barking deer has a white mark on its head.

Ya ngai tsun na gaw jahkyi na lam re. Jahkyi gaw baw kaw ah hpraw re pang re gaw hpabaw re na byin ai ngu hpe tsun dan mayu ai. Jahkyi gaw moi jahkra hpun jahkya si sa hta sha ai shaloi da shi gaw grai nmu ai hte grai hkup grai hka ai majaw shi gaw jahkra si nang e gaw ya kaw na gaw galoi mung nsha sai shade de nmu ai gaw ngu na shi gaw nsha sai ndai sha yang gaw ngai e mu ah chye u ga ngu na dai hku tsun ai da. Dai kaw na shi wa mat na hto bum hkaraw langai mi kaw du ai shaloi hkashi langai kaw du ai shaloi shi gaw hka lu mayu na hka wa lu dat ai da. Hka wa lu dat ai shaloi she shi gaw jahkya si sha da ai majaw grai mu nna she shi gaw grai bai mu ai majaw shi gaw hpang e bai jahkra si dai hpe bai sa hta sha ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
