Title Tsadan kanu (Witch who left her child with a human) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Long time ago, there was a witch. She had lots of children. She needed to find food for her children. She seriously thought where to keep her children while she was finding food. She got an idea which was to keep her children at human's house. There were many children at that house too. The witch took her children to the human's house and requested, "Humans! Can you keep my children for a while? I will pick them up when I come back in the evening." Then she went away from that house. The children of the witch were very playful and mad. They often hit and smashed the children of the humans. The human children had to cry very often because of them. The humans were very angry at the children of the witch. The humans discussed, "Those children are playful and mad. What should we do?" Then, the humans dug a big hole and put the children of the witch there. They could stay quietly then. The act of bullying was gone too. In the evening, the witch came back to that house and called her children, "My children!" The children shouted, "Mom! We are here." And they were coming out from the hole. The witch called, "Come here! My children." And she took her children back to home. The next day, the witch requested the humans to look her children again. The witch requested, "I have to go to work and keep my children please." The humans were very disappointed, but they didn't dare to deny the witch because they were afraid of her. They agreed to keep the children of the witch. The children of the witch bullied and smashed the children of the humans again. The humans were angry. They decided to put the children of the witch in the hole which they dug yesterday. Then they put the soil on it. They buried the children of the witch alive. The witch came back again in the evening and called, "My children!" Then the children answered, "Hello mom! We are here." And they came out of the hole. The mother called, "Come here." And she took her children back to her house. The next day, the witch went to the humans again. She requested them again to keep her children. The children of the witch bullied the children of the humans again. And the humans got angrier than the last days. They discussed again, "How to do with the children of the witch?" Finally, they got an idea. They killed the children of the witch one by one. And they cut the flesh into pieces. Then, they mixed with the chillies, salt, garlic and cooked the flesh. When it was cooked, they shared the meat to everyone. They fed even the babies that meat. They shared the meat not only with the matured but also with the children. In the evening, the witch came back again and called her children, "Where are you, my babies?" The children replied to their mother from the inside of the human's bodies, "Yes, mom." The witch said, "Oh! Don't come out anymore, my babies. You are in the safe place now." Then, she had gone away. Since that day, the misdeed exists in the mind of the people, and the evil could control the mind of the people till now.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
