Title Hpaga la yan hte sha lawa shingjawng hkat ai lam (The merchant and the man-eating giant comparing wits) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Two men were going somewhere to work as traders. It was getting dark before they reached their destination. So, they had to sleep on a field. They were scared to sleep there, so they slept close to each other. They touched each other's feet and slept like that. At night, a tiger came towards them. The tiger knew they were humans. So, it got closer to them and prepared to eat them. It saw a head of a human, so it thought, "I will eat from the legs first." So, it went to the leg side. But it saw another head! The tiger was surprised and thought, "How can this human have two heads!? It's impossible!" Soon, an elephant came there. It was surprised as well. It thought, "How can this human have two heads?" A deer and a boar saw them too. And they were surprised as well. A tortoise came in last and saw them. It was surprised too. They all stood around the two traders and looked at them. At that time, the two traders woke up. The animals were shocked and ran away quickly. Only the tortoise was left behind because it was slow. The two traders picked it up and put it in their bag. The next morning, they continued their journey. On their way, it was getting dark. They had to spend another night on a field again. They saw a big drum there. The next morning, they took that drum and continued their journey. After walking for a while, they reached another field. They saw a wooden plough on the field and picked it up. And then, they continued their journey. On their way, they met a group of ghouls. The ghouls caught them and took them to their cave. The traders were scared, but they said to the ghouls, "Before you eat us, let's compete for something. If you win, you can eat us. But if we win, release us." The ghouls agreed to compete. They said, "Let's compare louse from our hair and your louse." The two traders said, "Fine. Then, show us your louse." The ghouls took some louse and showed them to the two men. The two men said, "Okay, we will show the louse from human's hair now." They showed the tortoise. Then, the ghouls actually thought it was lice. The two traders had won the first round. The ghouls said, "Let's see whose comb is bigger. Here, look at ours! Show us your comb." The two traders showed the wooden plough they took from the field to the ghouls. The ghouls were surprised. The two traders won this round too. The ghouls didn't know what to do and said to them, "Let's compete for another thing. Let's listen to our stomach growling sound! Whose sound is louder?" Then, the two traders said, "Let us listen first then." The ghouls started producing the stomach growling sound, "Gwi, gwi, gwi." After their turn, the two traders hit the big drum loudly. When the ghouls heard, they were afraid and said, "We lost! You win." They ran away. There were much gold and money left in the cave. The two traders took all those treasures and went back home. They became rich and lived happily with their family. This is the end of the story.
