Title Sahta wa hte jahkrai ma (The rich man and the poor boy) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
There was a rich family in a village. They had hired many workers to work at their house and fields. And there were a widow and her son from the highland area. The son told his mother, "Mom, I will work to earn money." His mother said, "You are still so young. Who will hire you?" He said, "Mom, I can work very well. I will take care of you from now on." He went out his house and searched for a job. Then, he got to the rich's house. The rich family treated him with a delicious meal. The rich man said to him, "Okay, go back home now." When he got back home, his mother asked him, "You said you went to earn some money. Where is your money?" He said, "I've worked, but I don't get money yet." After some months, he went to the rich man's house. The wealthy man let him live in his house and treated him well. Then, the boy went back to his mother again. His mother asked him, "Have you earned some money yet?" He answered, "Not yet, mom. I will get some money this time." Soon, he went back to the rich man's house. The rich man said, "Stay here. You will have to work soon." On the seventh day, the rich man took him somewhere by horse. They took a cow's skin too. The rich man took him to a high mountain. When they reached at the base of the mountain, the rich man said, "Let's take a rest here." He spread the cow's skin and said to the boy, "Lie down here." As soon as he lay down there, the rich man quickly rolled him with the skin and tied tight. And he went back to his mansion. There were many hawks and eagles that ate people in the mountain. The birds saw him and attacked him. They picked him to the top of the mountain. The boy was scared and shouted, "Help! Help! Help!" But no one could hear him. He found a chance to escape from there. Then, he grabbed one of the falcon's legs tight. And it flew away to find its meal. It dropped him near the rich man's village. Then, the boy went back to his house alone. His mother asked him, "My boy, you work for a rich man. How much have you earned?" He didn't tell the truth and said, "I don't get it yet, mom." This time, he was smart and didn't let that kind of thing happen again to him. Later, he went back to the rich man's house again. The rich man treated him well this time too. He acted like nothing happened. The rich man took him to the mountain again. He spread the cow's skin and said to the boy, "Lie down here." The boy said, "My lord, how to lie down there? Can you show me first?" As soon as the rich man lay down there, he tied him quickly as he did to him before. Then he walked away and watched the rich man from a far distance. The rich man was in trouble and shouted, "Help me! Help me!" But the boy didn't save him. The rich man was attacked by the eagles and died. There were many treasures in that mountain too. The boy took those treasures and went back home. Since then, the boy and his widow mother became rich and lived happily.
