Title Gwi hte wa (The dog and the pig) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I'm going to tell a story about pig and dog. I'm going to tell about how dog could live on balcony. In the past, Kachin people didn't have any pigsties separately. In a house, pig and dog lived together on the same place where people lived. And as human standard of living had been rising, people thought that they shouldn't live together with animals anymore. So, they thought about that, and then they told the pig and dog, "Only one of you can live together with us to save and protect us from any danger." The house owner told them, "Between you two, the one who is cleverer and hardworking can live on balcony and the one who is not clever enough will have to stay outside of the house. Go and work today then." The pig thought that it could be able to live inside the house then and it worked all day by turning up and rooting the field with its snout. While the pig was working, the dog was sleeping in a hollow of a tree trunk with its tongue out as the weather was sunny. At night, the pig thought that it had done a lot of work and the owner would like it since it had worked a lot. Then it went back by rooting all around the field with its snout. The dog woke up as soon as the pig left. The dog left its footprints on the work that the pig had worked all day. It left its footprints everywhere. And it did like just making smoothly on the place where the pig rooting with its snout. The next day when the owner came and looked, he saw that there were only the dog's footprints. There weren't any footprints of pig. Then he thought that dog was the one which worked harder. So he told them that the dog could live on balcony since it worked harder than the pig, and the pig had to live in a pigsty. That's why we, Kachin people, let the dog stay on the balcony since then.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
