Title Indaw nawng a lam (Indaw lake)
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
There is a lake called In Daw in Kachin State. It lies in the west of Hopin (town). It is 14 miles in length and 9 miles in width. There is a big lake called In Daw in Kachin state. When we ask how this lake has formed, it is said because of the dragons. The dragon lived in a lake in the back of Dum Bang village. A father dragon and his son lived in that big lake near Dum Bang village. The son dragon said, "Dad, I want to build a village. And I want to get married too." The father told him, "If you can build a village and can get married, I will never show myself again. Do it if you can." He said, "Okay then. I will make it happens." And he swam along Namti stream. He laid eggs near the village. The villagers saw those eggs. Then, they took one egg and cooked it. The amount of the egg had been increasing when they cooked it. The villagers from seven villages couldn't finish it. There were a grandmother and her grandson in that village too. But they were poor. So, no one invited them to eat the dragon egg. Soon, there was a landslide in those villages. Actually, the grandson really wanted to eat the egg. But the old grandmother said, "Don't eat it, my grandson. They don't invite us to eat." The boy licked the leftover egg on the leaves because he really wanted to eat it. After eating the egg, the boy was also dead because of a landslide. The grandmother was very old and couldn't run away. Then, she put her walking stick on the ground upside down and said, "The lord of earth, please stop landsliding. I can't run anymore." Till today, there is a place where the bamboos are growing upside down. We believe that it really happened in the past. When we think about it or ask about it, we have learnt that it actually happened in the past. We can the bamboo plants growing upside down near the lake when we travel past In Daw. Everyone can see it. I am just sharing what I know about In Daw lake with you, Sara. Thank you very much.
