The story I am going to tell is about an orphanage child and a group of young men (brothers-german). Once upon a time, there was a family which had many young boys and lived in a village. In that village, there was an orphanage young boy who lived together with his grandma as his parents had passed away. One day, they [ a group of young boys] and the orphanage planned to set up bird-trapped, and then they went out when they arrived at one tree, one boy from brothers German said, " I will set-up the bird trap here." Then, when they found another, one of the brothers-german said the same, and they kept on setting up on all the trees where the birds came to eat the fruits. As they had set up on all the trees, the orphanage child did not know where to set up his snare, so he just simply set up his snare on the ground of the tree. Then, the next morning, the brothers-german called the orphanage child, "Let's go...orphanage child, let us go and check our snares," they went in the early morning. As they went early, they saw that a deer was trapped at the orphanage child's snare. The deer was trapped on the ground snare, and subsequently, the brothers german's snare trapped a toucan as they set up it on the tree. Then, they untied the toucan and trapped and hung it on the orphanage child's snare. After that, they also took the deer and trapped it in their snare on the tree. Then, they went together again with the orphanage child to check their snare then the toucan was trapped on the ground. The brothers-german's snare was trapped with the deer, which only lives on the ground, not on the tree. After that, the orphanage child said, "You guys are bullying me, the bird should be caught in your snare, but why is it caught in my snare? It means you guys have changed it." Then, they threatened him, "Hey, orphanage child, you want to die or speak properly, how can we change it as we come together and check them, they're just like what you see." The orphanage child replied, "It is impossible," and then they were arguing, and soon later, they called the monsieurs to intervene. When they called monsieurs, most of all good monsieurs in the village were called by the brothers-german, the orphanage child did not know who to be his monsieur. The orphanage sighed, "As they asked all the wise men in the village," then he asked an old man who lived poorly in the outskirts of the village. He said, "Hey... granddad, please kindly help me." He said, "Today, the brothers-german is planning to kill me if I do not win this dispute." "They have already asked all the monsieurs who are well-spoken to represent them." "I do have any idea who to be called; therefore, I came here as I trust you to be my monsieurs," then the old man replied, "Aw...okay, you can go home, and I will come later." As the old man asked him to go home first, the brothers-german's monsieurs said, "Hey... orphanage child, When will your monsieur arrive?" I had already asked him, and he said he would come later as he lived alone. I thought he was still preparing to come here. The orphanage child said, "he will come soon", then the monsieurs of the brothers-german said, "Can you go quickly and ask your monsieur to come, we are wondering who you have invited?" Soon later, the old man came. The old man came with heavy perspiration, they said, "Hey... an old man, you have insulted us as if you are the orphanage child's monsieur." "You have made us wait the whole day, and you just came at this late time," then the old man," You guys are accusing that I am insulting you, actually I have been extinguishing tiredly the wildfire the whole day which kept on burning at the desert, I just successfully put out the fire then I come here immediately." After that, the monsieurs said, "Hey... we have never heard that the wildfire is burning in the desert, we only hear this today, you are the only one who is saying this nonsense, how can the fire burn on the sand." Afterwards, the old man said, "Um...a toucan which only flies in the sky trap on the ground snare, and a deer which only lives on the land trap on the tree snare, I only heard it today." After the old man said it, they did not need to say many words. After the old man said it, the orphanage child successfully argued the case. Hence, the monsieur mediated the case for both parties to achieve fulfilment, they gave the deer to the orphanage child and gave the toucan to the brothers-german and settled the case.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
