Title Mang Bya hte baren (The clever rabbit Mang Bya and the dragon) with English translation and notes

This is a story which has been told as a bedtime story to the children by the elders. We listen to it many times. But we don't get bored with it. We still like it so much. That story is about Hkanghtang Mangbya (this name is for the people or animals which always lie and tease others). In this story, Hkanghtang Mangbya is a rabbit. It was intelligent and good at lying. It always lied and teased around the village. As it was intelligent and good at lying, it always could escape from death. One day, it went to a forest. At one place, it had to cross a river. There lived a mythical serpent. When the rabbit crossed the river, the mythical serpent caught it and kept in its mouth. It was thinking how it could save its own life. Then the mythical serpent said, "Now I can eat you. You will not be able to escape this time." The rabbit replied, "If you are the king of this forest, you should not just chuckle. You have to laugh heartily like a winner." The mythical serpent also believed what it said. So, it laughed loudly and shouted, "I can eat you. Ha Ha Ha!" While it opened its mouth wide, the rabbit jumped out. As it was smart, it could run away from danger.

Shi gaw kalang mare hkan ne gaw galoi shagu shi gaw masu hkawm nau masu na nau nyan rawng na shi na asak gaw galoi shagu lawt ai lam rai nga. Lani mi na da ndai hkanghtang mangbya gaw i shi nam de sa shaloi she ndai hkashi 1 kaw rap ra na hku rai nga hka shi 1 kaw rap na she ndai hka shi kaw gaw baren kaba nga ai hku rai nga. 1. Mang Bya is a popular trickster in Kachin folktales, who are a person or an animal that always lies and teases others. It is known by the names of Mang Bya, Nang Bya, Mawng Byaw, and others depending on dialects and languages.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
