A story told by Lawrence Poduga. Before Christianity, women who became Malawungs remained invisible to the community or society. When a paramount chief married many Malawungs, they were all covered with a woven mat so that no one but their husband could see their faces. If someone secretly saw the face of a Malawung, and the chief found out, the chief would order the person who saw the face of a chief's Malawung wife to be killed. Traditional laws and Paramount Chiefs were well respected by the society and those who showed no respect were almost immediately killed by order of the chief. The orders were usually given to a chief from another village to carry out. Polygamy and Malawungs no longer exist. |
